5 of the best apps to track your reading and discover new books

app to find new books

As 2022 comes to a close, you may be looking for the best reads of the year that you might have missed, or you may want to start compiling a list of books you want to read in the new year. There are numerous apps out there that are designed to help you keep track of your reading and discover new books, so we compiled a list of some of the best ones to help you pick one that’s to your liking.

Some of the apps on this list are somewhat new, while others have been around for a few years. Amazon-owned Goodreads , which is arguably the most popular book-related app, isn’t included in this list because we’re focusing on newer, lesser-known platforms.

Storygraph app

StoryGraph is an  Android and iOS app that lets you track your reading and get personalized recommendations. You can mix and match the app’s set of filters to find your next perfect read. The app offers many reading challenges, such as reading one book from every country in the world or reading one book per week across several genres. StoryGraph also includes a built-in reading journal and annual reading and page goals.

The app’s rating system is unique because it gives users a series of questions that the platform will then use when recommending a book to another user. For example, if you say that the book you read would be good for someone who likes emotional and fast-paced novels, StoryGraph may recommend that book to someone who is looking for such a read. The rating system also lets you rate using full, half or quarter stars, unlike Goodreads, which only lets you rate on a full-star system.

StoryGraph is great for people who want something kind of similar to Goodreads. The app is free to use, but also offers a $4.99 per month subscription plan that unlocks additional features, such as advanced stats and more personalized suggestions.

app to find new books

Tertulia is a somewhat new iPhone app that differentiates itself from other similar book discovery platforms by using machine learning to scan online discussions to see what books people are talking about. The app starts off by asking you to specify what kinds of books you want to read. You can choose to get recommendations from people you follow on Twitter, along with fiction authors, feminist voices, journalists, book critics, scientists and more. Then, the app will serve you daily recommendations tailored to your interests, which improve the more you engage with books on the app.

The app lets you browse books that are currently popular, while also helping you keep track of what you want to read. If you find a book that interests you, you can purchase it directly from the app if you live in the United States. Tertulia’s app is easy to use and features an intuitive browsing experience.

Tertulia is great for people who want to discover what books are currently popular across social media, podcasts and the web. The app is free to use and is launching on Android soon.

Basmo app

Basmo is an Android and iOS app that is designed to help you create a reading habit while also tracking your books. The app is mainly geared toward people who want to become a better and more efficient reader. Basmo tracks the time you spend reading and gives you an overview of your overall reading progress. You can also create a personalized reading schedule to help you easily tackle your goals one page at a time.

As you read, you can use Basmo to digitally scribble your thoughts and ideas about parts of a book that you find interesting. You can also scan and highlight your favorite passages as you read. Once you finish a book, you can track how it made you feel. For example, you can note if the book made you feel excited, happy, angry, bored or confused.

The app is great for people who don’t care about the social or community aspects of reading and instead want to focus on their goals and progress. Basmo is free to use with standard features. The app also offers a $5 per month subscription that unlocks unlimited functionality and additional features.

Readerly app

Readerly is an Android and iOS book discovery app that helps you track your reading and find new books. Unlike every other app in this roundup, Readerly doesn’t include a five-star rating system. Instead, the app provides context with every review that shows you how much your tastes overlap with the reviewer, books you’ve both read and topics you both enjoy. The point of this is to prevent you from possibly passing over a book that you may actually end up liking, regardless of what it’s rated on another platform.

The app also moves away from long reviews and instead has Gists, which are the app’s short review format. Gists essentially get users to write a TL;DR version of a review in 200 characters or less. Gists are then turned into an Instagram Stories-like format. Once you’ve created your Gist, you can add additional slides with your favorite quotes, characters or other additional information that you think others might find helpful. In terms of book discovery, the app will surface Gists from readers with similar reading tastes as you.

Readerly is great for people who want to try a unique book discovery platform. The app is free to use and also offers a $2.99 monthly subscription fee for users who want to support the new platform and receive personalized ratings.

TBR Bookshelf

TBR bookshelf

TBR Bookshelf is a fairly new iOS app that is mainly catered toward #BookTok, a popular TikTok sub-community focused on popular books and literature. The app offers a simple and decluttered user interface. Like other book tracking apps, TBR Bookshelf lets you track books you’ve read, want to read and are currently reading. The app’s rating system lets you outline your favorite characters and quotes. You can also note if you reread a book or if you didn’t finish a book at all.

The app has specific rating categories for different genres that go beyond star ratings. For example, if you are rating a self-help book, you can give it separate ratings based on how inspirational and helpful it was. Or, if you’re rating a classic book, you can give it different ratings based on how heartfelt and interesting it was.

TBR Bookshelf is a good app for people who are part of #BookTok, as many of the features are geared toward these users. The app is free to use but also offers a $4.99 monthly subscription that unlocks extra features, including things like seasonal ratings, book playlists and TV show and movie adaption ratings.

What people are saying.

We think Libby is the simplest way to start reading ebooks and audiobooks from your library. Don't just take our word for it though, see what everyone else is saying!

I LOVE reading and anywhere!

“I love being able to read or listen to books from my local library but it also allows for books too expensive through Amazon, that I can read through this ereader. Well done. I LOVE reading and anywhere I can read as freely as I enjoy it; whether that’s 5 books a day or 150 a month… An e-reader be it Libby or my Kindle or both… they allow me to read my fill regardless of my inability to always get to the library or to search stacks at bookstores. I can be comfortable in my own place.”

- Margaret M., Google Play ™  Store review

Re-connecting back to the Library

"I feel like I just re-found my love for the library again. This app helps re-connect with these amazing and free resources back inot reading books but also magazines. I know the library is free but I didn't know what an array they have for electronic resources. It is great and helpful."

- J-Phx, Apple App Store review

Free Audiobooks Rock!

"I am dyslexic and old enough that is was never diagnosed in school. This is such a simple way for me to enjoy books I would never be able to read.I have been listening to the CDs for a long time. But having it on my phone allows me to listen whenever and wherever. Also this is one of the more efficient apps I have come across. Thank you Libby."

- Brezzy307, Apple App Store review

OverDrive has hit it out the park

"This app is intuitive, helpful, and like having a librarian in my pocket. While I will take any opportunity to visit a brick and mortar library, it isn't always possible. This app gives me all the bok love I need when I am away from a real library. Keep up the great work."

Great if you’re willing to give up some time!

This app is one of my main apps! I personally read consistently everyday and I LOVE to log my books online. I personally hated logging my books in elementary school on paper. But this—has so many exceptions. For the people looking to see what the heck this app even does: you can add friends to see books they’re reading and if you want can compete. You can ofc log books! You cannot read books, this is not an online library! But it seriously has EVERY 👏🏻 BOOK 👏🏻 EVER 👏🏻 TO 👏🏻 BE 👏🏻 WRITTEN. Not for you to read, but to update your book status! If you put in your page number, it will tell you the percentage you’re in your book. There are three different shelves you can put a book under: Want to read, Read, and Currently Reading. There’s annual challenges like the 2023 reading challenge where you can set a goal of how many books you want to read in the year and it will log them! I love this and I beg you to get it. There’s no fees at all! You also can see recommended books for you based on your previous read books so they figure your taste. It may be incorrect at first, but I now get great recommendations that I would totally read. All my bookworms, get this right now.

Love it but I’ve got some ideas

Don’t get me wrong this app is helpful and I use it all the times but it can be pretty clunky sometimes The featured booklists on your page are kinda tricky to find again and I wish there was a whole tab for them with like recently viewed lists and recommendations and things like that because when you accidentally leave an amazing list and can’t find it it’s the worst. The biggest issue I have is it’s not the most new user friendly. I got this app and had so many books and shelves to create for my previous reads but it takes five clicks to add a book to a shelf. When I make a shelf it’s because I realize I have lots of books similar and so scrolling through my reads and clicking five times for each is not fun at all and takes all day. I wish there was a select tool so you could add multiple books to a shelf at a time this would probably make this review five stars. Another little issue I have (and maybe I just can’t figure it out) is Re reading. If I read a book multiple times why can’t I count both towards my reading challenge? It won’t be an accurate page count if it turns out that was just the one of the times I read the book that year. I feel like you should have multiple reading dates on your book info so it isn’t just showing the last time you read it. If this is a feature and I just haven’t found it then I apologize. Definitely needs a refresh I just looked at version history and it’s mostly bug fixes! This app NEEDS something new

needs a revamp

i use this app religiously but it needs an revamp BAD. the UI looks like it hasnt changed since day 1 and itd be nice if i could see my friends activity more often than i see ads on my feed 😑. would be nice if we could personalize our profiles, but not necessary. also recommendations or searching through genres could be greatly enhanced by further filtering of intended audiences—i dont want to scroll through twenty 20 childrens fantasy books before even finding one mediocre adult fantasy book im not interested in. ABSOLUTELY would benefit from half star rating system or even 10 star rating system im tired of seeing a 3 star review with “3.5 stars …” or a 1 star review with “0.5 stars…” in the actual review. the app is also not super user friendly and is generally clunky. lots of unnecessary tapping needed and idk what it is but the searching function is super clunky too. i feel like the search option should first search our shelves for matches before searching the rest of the database for matches. definitely need a multi-select option to make shelving multiple books easier. i have over 300 books in my read im not reshelving each individual book, jeffrey. add tags in reviews so we can filter by tags. basically more filtering options for everything. add private reviews only your friends can see so that they dont affect the overall review of the book (sometimes you can acknowledge a book is well-written and still hate it).

The 9 Best Book Reading Apps of 2024

E-readers are great, but don't count your phone out. These apps make reading on your phone a breeze

Book lovers no longer lack choices regarding quality ebook and audiobook apps. Here are some of the best book reader apps for Android, iOS , and Windows devices.

Best Free Book Reading App: Media365 Book Reader

Massive library of popular and niche ebooks that can be read for free.

Ability to import your own ebook files for reading in the app.

Offline reading requires a $1.99 upgrade.

Only for Android.

Media365 is a free reading app for Android that lets you read any of the books in its library in exchange for the occasional fullscreen advertisement. Authors can self-publish on the Media 365 platform, which is why so many niche and indie titles are available. Many mainstream books are also available, like the entire Harry Potter book series.

The Media 365 library stores eBooks in 15 languages, while font size can be adjusted simply by doing a two-finger pinch on the screen. There’s also a text-to-speech function, which lets the app read books to you. You can also upload your ebooks with supported EPUB, PDF, AZW3, CBC, CBR, CBZ, CHM, FB2, LIT, MOBI, TCR, AI, and PUB formats.

Best eBook Reader App for Amazon Prime Members: Kindle

Massive library of ebooks to choose from.

Apps are updated on a very regular basis.

The Kindle app for Windows is more for traditional computers than touchscreens.

Can’t buy ebooks within the iOS or Android Kindle app.

The official Kindle apps on iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows are Amazon’s way of letting their customers consume their Kindle ebooks without having to buy a Kindle.

Any Kindle-branded ebook on the Amazon website can be read within the Kindle app. A variety of features set this app experience apart from its rivals, including the built-in dictionary, the ability to skip ahead without losing your place, and Amazon’s X-Ray tech, which reveals extra information on a book’s characters and world while you’re reading.

The Amazon Kindle apps aren’t perfect, though. The Windows Kindle app is designed more for traditional desktop computers than modern devices with touchscreens, and the iOS and Android versions don’t support ebook purchases. However, Kindle eBooks can still be purchased on the Amazon website and will sync to the Kindle app almost immediately.

Most-Available Reading App: Rakuten Kobo

Loads of options to customize the reading experience.

There’s an official Kobo app for most phones in existence.

The Windows app is incredibly outdated, and the Facebook login doesn’t work.

Audiobooks are only available on the iOS and Android apps.

Rakuten’s Kobo is a major competitor to Amazon, with millions of ebooks and a growing number of audiobooks on its platform. The iOS and Android Kobo apps are clearly where the company puts most of its attention, with each app offering an impressive variety of font sizes, styles, and color options to make the reading experience more personal and comfortable for individual users.

The Kobo app is also available for Windows 10 in the Microsoft Store app store. Windows users will want to download the separate desktop version of the app, though, which is updated regularly and offers more features. The desktop app also works on Macs.

Best Reading App for Kids: Epic!

Lots of in-app gamification that encourages kids to read more.

Great selection of classic and modern children’s books.

App requires a monthly subscription to use, though a 30-day free trial is available.

Changing settings is a bit of a convoluted process.

Epic! is like a Netflix for kids, but instead of TV shows and movies, it supplies the user with a massive library of ebooks and audiobooks . Parents can make unique profiles for each of their children, who can customize their profiles based on their tastes.

While many classic children’s books are available to download, there are also many modern releases, such as one series of books covering famous pop culture icons. Children can also choose from family-friendly comic books like Snoopy and The Smurfs and numerous short video clips created by DreamWorksTV.

Best iPhone eBook Reader App: Yomu EBook Reader

Supports EPUB, MOBI, PRC, AZW, AZW3, KF8, CBZ, CBR, and PDF files.

eBooks can be saved to the Yomu app from any iOS web browser.

Settings menu is very hard to find after adding books.

Download links should be in the main menu, not in the tutorial.

The Yomu EBook Reader is a fantastic app for iPhone and iPad users who download their ebooks in various file formats and want to bring them all together for a cohesive reading experience.

Yomu, Japanese for “to read,” supports all of the popular ebook file formats and those supported by Amazon Kindle. Files can be imported to the app via a cloud service like iCloud , Dropbox, Google Drive , or OneDrive , and once the app is installed, Yomu will appear as a source when saving ebook files from any iOS web browser app.

PDF eBook Reading App: Foxit PDF Reader

PDF files can be shared directly to the app on iOS.

Reflow options makes all files readable on small screens.

Ability to create a new PDF file requires a $14.99 monthly subscription on iOS and Android.

Lack of a back button on app screens makes navigation very confusing.

Foxit PDF Reader Mobile is one of the better PDF apps and is an ideal solution for those who prefer to consume ebooks in the PDF file format . Unlike many similar apps that display a PDF as is and require you to pinch and zoom to read its content, Foxit features a reflow setting that resizes and reorganizes the text on a page to fit perfectly on a mobile phone’s screen.

PDF files can be transferred to the Foxit app via Wi-Fi , iCloud, or Foxit’s own Foxit Drive service. Those using an iOS device can import downloaded files directly from the share feature while using other apps. A monthly subscription is needed to take advantage of many advanced settings, but those looking for an app to simply read their PDF ebooks will be fine with the free functionality.

Best eBook Reader For Android Phones And Tablets: AIReader

Supports a lot of Android devices with the minimum OS requirement being Android 2.3.

Multiple profiles can be used for different app settings.

No support for PDF files.

Scrolling can be very jittery on lower-end Android tablets.

AIReader is a popular reading app on Android due to its support for older Android smartphones and tablets running operating systems as out-of-date as Android 2.3. It should be mentioned that many of the scrolling and related animations aren’t as smooth as they should be on older devices, but the ebook reading experience is still solid. Most major file types will work no matter which Android device you’re on.

Best Reading App on Nintendo Switch: Inky Pen

Large selection of free comics from lots of popular franchises.

Comics look great on the Nintendo Switch.

$7.99 a month will be a bit expensive for some people.

No Marvel or DC Comics series.

Most would think the Nintendo Switch is just for playing games, but its library of non-game apps has been slowly growing since its launch. One of these apps, Inky Pen, is a full-fledged comic book reading app that lets anyone read full digital issues from popular comic book series on their Switch.

Inky Pen does charge a monthly fee of $7.99 for unlimited access to its entire library, but there are an impressive amount of free issues available that will keep most comic fans entertained during long car trips or lazy weekends. What’s cool is the app works when the Nintendo Switch is docked so that a group can read comics on a TV.

Best Reading App for Google Addicts: Google Play Books

Very smooth reading experience with a page turn animation looks fantastic.

Runs really well on cheap, low-end Android tablets.

App needs to switch to the Google Play app every time you want to read more about a book.

Has a much smaller selection than Amazon.

Google Play Books, as its title suggests, is Google’s first-party app for reading ebooks and listening to audiobooks bought within the Google Play Store . The book selection isn’t as extensive as Amazon’s, but it’s still large enough to please the casual reader. Those who enjoy reading at least one book a day may want more.

The good thing is that Google Play Books doesn’t need a subscription service. It can be used to enjoy a purchased ebook or audiobook one weekend, then ignored for a week without feeling financial guilt for not taking advantage of some monthly fee.

It’s a very solid reading experience for when you want to use it, is incredibly stable and easy to use, and has some of the best page-turn animations out of all the book-reading apps.

Google Play Books is an excellent reading app, especially for those immersed in the Google ecosystem.

5 Cool New Book Recommendation Apps and Sites to Find Your Next Read

Find your next read with these book recommendation sites and apps that curate social media trends, celebrity endorsements, and personal opinions.

One of the most popular new year's resolutions is to read more books in the next year. You can take challenges like reading a book a week, a book a month, or set a target of 25, 50, or 100 books in the year. Of course, all these require you to find books worth reading from the millions out there.

It's a problem that occurs so often that new sites and apps are regularly launched to tackle this. The entrants in this new list are as good, if not better. From celebrity book recommendations to finding the best books trending on social media, you're guaranteed to discover your next read here.

1. Readerly (Android, iOS): Instagram for Book Recommendations

Readerly is like an Instagram for book lovers, with book recommendations from like-minded people

Readerly looks and feels like an Instagram for book recommendations from both like-minded people as well as those with extremely different tastes. The app eschews the usual rating systems and instead asks people to post about why they like certain books and shows these to those who share similar interests.

Each post is called a "Gist", a tiny 200-character review of what it's about and why you liked it. You can then add a few other slides to your post about things people need to know, like "reminds me of," "warnings," "favorite quote," "dislikes," or your custom slide headers. It's a cool synopsis of everything you would tell a real-life friend while recommending a book.

The feed automatically shows you posts by people with similar interests to yours (which you set up while creating your profile). When you see someone's post, you can swipe left to see a graph of how their likes and dislikes match up with yours, so you know whether to trust their recommendation or not.

Apart from the main feed, you can also browse other Readerly data. Top-Rated shows you the best books as rated by the Readerly community, while Best Sellers shows the most popular books that you are likely to enjoy. You can also filter books by time period and find books similar to something you enjoyed.

2. Read This Twice (Web): Book Recommendations by Celebrities and Famous People

Read This Twice is a collection of book recommendations by celebrities and famous people, citing the original source of what they said about it

Entrepreneurs, politicians, authors, actors and film personalities, musicians, activists, journalists — everyone is on social media or the internet in some form these days. And several famous people actively post book recommendations on their channels. Read This Twice collects all these celebrity-recommended books in one place.

You can browse the site by people or by books. People includes personalities like Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, J. K. Rowling, Barack Obama, Elon Musk, and many more, who you can filter by their profession. On their page, you'll see all their book recommendations in a list, along with the source of the original tweet, blog post, or interview to know what they said about the book.

If you browse with Books , you can filter them by the usual fiction and non-fiction genres or check out curated lists like the best personal development books or most recommended books by different celebrities. And when you click a book's page, you'll find all the famous quotes about it in one place, making it the greatest book jacket any author could hope for.

3. Glimbay (Web): Discover Books by Reading Their Three Best Quotes

Glimbay showcases three top quotes about any book as a way to know what it's about or what you can expect

A while ago, we discovered the cool site Recommend Me a Book , which shows you the first few pages of a book while hiding the author or title so that you aren't influenced by those factors. In another unique way to find book recommendations , Glimbay shows you the best quotes from a book before you read it.

Glimbay doesn't hide the author or title. In fact, it even shows the book cover and includes a short description of the content. But the main takeaways are the three top quotes selected from the text to give you a feel of what you can expect on those pages. It's unclear how Glimbay selects these quotes, but if we had to guess, these are probably the most-highlighted quotes on Kindle or Goodreads.

The best way to use Glimbay is to click the "Find a Random Book" button and keep stumbling upon new titles. But you can also browse the full catalog by genres such as business, self-help, biographies, children's books, fiction, etc. Glimbay also features a search engine to find authors, quotes, or titles.

4. Books-a-Million's BookTok (Web): Discover Trending Books on TikTok

Book-a-Million scours through Tiktok's popular #BookTok hashtag to create a list of trending and most recommended books on the social network

If you're looking for something to read, some of the best book recommendations are on social media these days. In fact, on TikTok, the hashtag #BookTok has become a thriving community of book lovers who review and recommend their favorite reads. It's so big that publishers have stated that a viral Tiktok video can move bestseller lists. But given the nature of TikTok, it's difficult to find one place to browse all these recommendations.

Online retailer Books-a-Million has scoured these TikTok videos to create a library of all the book recommendations. You can find the latest trends and what's going viral next, shop by all-time bestsellers, sort alphabetically by author, and more. Books-a-Million also includes popular #BookTok sub-hashtags to filter by, such as #BookLover, #DiversifyYourShelves, #HorrorTok, #HiddenGems, and more.

Another neat hack is to visit the dedicated BookTok pages on Amazon and Barnes & Noble . Both retailers use the incoming referral links from TikTok videos to ascertain the most popular books on #BookTok. You can browse these by genre, top trending titles, and all-time bestsellers.

Given the nature of the audience on TikTok, a large number of the top #BookTok books fall into the young adult fiction, young adult fantasy, romance, and crime categories. You'll also find a lot of recommendations from BIPOC and LGBTQ authors, as well as women authors.

5. BookVine (Web): Middle-Schooler's Guide to Find Age-Appropriate Books for Kids

BookVine is a middle-schooler's website with over 300 books to recommend age-appropriate reading for children

Washington middle-schooler Shravan R was an avid reader since he was a child and saw his father struggling to find age-appropriate books for him. So he took the bull by the horns and created a website for book recommendations for children up to 14 in different age groups.

Broadly, there are four age ranges: 4-6 years (picture-based books), 6-8 years (beginner readers), 8-10 years (books with recurring characters), and 10-14 years (advanced readers and book series). Each book shows the title, author name, book cover, genre, and links to find at online libraries or on Amazon. And if you see a "Review Available" link, click it to read Shravan's thoughts on the book.

There are two other interesting sections to find books for kids. Awarded Books lists all titles that have won prestigious literary awards like the Newbery Medal, Alex Awards, and National Book Award. The "Series" section shows books that are part of a long multiple-part series, like Percy Jackson or Legacy of Orisha.

If you find something you want to read, don't forget to check if it's available on the best sites for reading children's books online .

Start With Easy Books and Past Favorites

If you're picking up a reading habit after a long time, you need to retrain your brain. You are probably too used to staring at screens and actively being fed data rather than the slow journey of reading a book.

The Guardian offers a great tip to get you started, saying you should pick up easy books to begin with, written in clear and simple language, and featuring the kind of genres that you enjoy. Another popular tip is to re-read a book you have loved in the past since you're familiar with the plot and can concentrate on regaining the joy of reading.

How to Keep Up With New Book Releases

It can be daunting keeping up with new book releases. So many new books come out EVERY! WEEK! (every Tuesday, to be precise) and there’s so much information and so little time and *hyperventilates*. Have no fear. We’re here to help. Here are nine places to help you keep up with new releases and find your next favorite book.

Book Riot Insiders

You would not believe how beautiful the New Releases Index is. We have a demo so you can try before you buy, but here’s the gist: Our intrepid book curators load up all the info (title, author, cover, price, page count, synopsis, etc.) on forthcoming books to this database. You can sort by genre, or change the filters to show books you’ve you’ve previously marked, have been recently added, are trending, or—my favorite—books that Liberty has extreme heart-eyes for. This is by far the best way to keep track of new book releases and what you’re looking out for. And I’m not just saying that.

The behemoth Amazon, of course, has a huge catalog of new releases. The list is focused more on new and future bestsellers, rather than a more complete look at what is new or forthcoming right now. But it’s still a good list, Brent. You can also sort by genre to narrow down your lists.

Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble’s new book releases list defaults to showing bestsellers first, but there’s a dropdown menu where you can change the list to view by newest (with “available for pre-order” links!), price, or alphabetical order. The list also has ribbons showing bestsellers and books with exclusive B&N content.

If you don’t want to be looking at new releases on a retailer’s site, Goodreads is the place to go. The glory of Goodreads is that the new releases page defaults to books by authors you already have on your shelves. You can also view all the new releases coming out that month, sorted by average rating/number of ratings.

Publishers Weekly

Every season, Publishers Weekly publishes a list of the top books coming out for each genre. Poetry, mystery/thriller, romance, etc. They also have various free newsletters to keep up with new releases and other industry information.

Shelf Awareness

Shelf Awareness posts all kinds of book content, and also sends out two weekly email newsletters, listing the best 25 books coming out that week. And the newsletters are tailored for two different kinds of subscribers: average readers and industry insiders.

Rich in Color

This. Site. Is. Beautiful. The focus is young adult books (fiction and nonfiction) by and about people of color. Mostly they publish reviews of new and upcoming books, but they also have a handy release calendar.

Bustle Books

Bustle Books does some really great work, from lists of new releases to longform pieces about how books touch our world.

Buzzfeed Books

You have to do some digging through quizzes and nostalgia posts to find the new releases, but Buzzfeed Books does do a roundup of new books each season.

But Wait, There’s More! Publishers’ Sites

A number of publishers also have their own websites to promote their new releases. Penguin-Random House has  Read It Forward , HarperCollins has  EpicReads  (with a focus on YA), Simon & Schuster has  Off the Shelf , and so, so many more.

You can also find your favorite authors and publishers online, and see if they have newsletters or social accounts you can follow for more direct alerts!

And if you need even more help keeping up with new book releases, check out this post with loads of Booktubers, podcasts, newsletters, and more to follow.

7 Best Book Recommendation Sites and Apps to Find Your Next Read

Book Recommendation Sites and Apps

Whether you have a private library or picking up a book for the first time, making a choice can be hard. You always have the option to ask your friends but why depend on a limited source when you have far better ways to stumble upon good books? So without further ado, here are some of the best book recommendation sites and apps to nail your next read. Let’s begin.

Table of Contents

Sites and Apps to Recommend Books Based on What You Like

1. recommend me a book.

If you believe in the concept of ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’, this one is the perfect book recommendation site for you. It picks a random book and shows the reader only the first page of the book. If you what you read, you get an option to reveal the name and author of the book at the end of the page. In case you don’t like the first page, make use of the Next Book option to shuffle.

book recommendation sites

The genre feature is one option I like the most. It allows you to apply filters to the search results and choose a specific genre. For example, adventure, biography, horror, humor, etc. You can also change the font size and the text alignment if you like.

  • No sign-in required
  • Clean webpage without ads
  • Shows Amazon links for books
  • No book reviews
  • Limited book database

Visit Recommend Me a Book ( iOS | Android | Website )

2. The Book Apothecary

The Book Apothecary is a section of a larger website, Read it Forward , which caters to book lovers. The website has multiple sections such as yearly/monthly book lists, book excerpts, etc. However, I’m just going to talk about the book recommendation section. A user can easily reach the section from the Your Next Read option on the website’s top bar. The Book Apothecary has a very unique way of recommending books – according to your mood. It requires users to select mood in two stages after which they are shown book results.

Get book recommendations by mood

The suggested results are limited to three books which is disappointing and I also found the recommendations off the mark. However, if you take other sections of the website into consideration, it’s a good package. You can find podcasts, essays, articles, videos, and even author interviews which might be of interest to many.

  • Recommends books by mood
  • Multiple useful sections for readers
  • Frequent book giveaways
  • Multiple shop links (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks)
  • Limited to three book recommendation
  • Low perfect match probability

Visit The Book Apothecary

3. Read This Twice

Every once in a while, we come across posts on social media with a list of books famous people have read. Whether it’s Warren Buffet’s book recommendations for budding investors or Steve Jobs’s favorite book list . If you like to read more books by influential personalities, Read This twice is a good starting point. It has a whole section dedicated to the books recommended by personalities along with their quotes and views about the book (with source).

Find books famous people like

There are multiple genres to select books from. The sidebar is dedicated to various genres and professions be it actors, bloggers, scientists, and many more. In addition, you get a short bio about the person, book summary, Goodreads rating and also comments (if recommended by more people listed). You can also add your favorite books to the library, although it requires sign-in.

  • Large database of book recommendations
  • Covers personalities from various fields
  • Shows Goodreads rating, publish date, category, ISBN number, etc.
  • Contains a comprehensive list by book genre
  • Shows if a book is available on Audible
  • Found broken Amazon links

Visit Read This Twice

4. Whichbook

Consider Whichbook a book recommendation site with a bit of all the above websites combined. There are several ways you can look for your next read. You can filter books by emotion/mood, character, plot and they cover bestsellers too. What makes this one different from all the others is the world map section. As you might have already guessed, you can browse books by country of origin. It’s a great way to find books related to a certain culture or geographical location. All these are presented in a 3D scrollable map where you can simply click on the continent > country and find a list of books.

Book recommendation site by region

Another unique feature is the borrow section which displays all the public libraries where you can borrow books from. The rest of the book recommendation filters such as mood/emotion and character/plot section are comprehensive. The mood section allows the user to drag the slider to set the intensity of a mood. For example, happy or sad, gentle or violent, etc. In terms of character/plot, you can filter by plot, race, age, gender, etc.

  • World map of books
  • Multiple filter options
  • Public library listing to borrow
  • Books cover used as templates
  • Shows book extract and related books
  • Fairly limited books for specific countries
  • No sign-in option (can’t save books or make a list)

Visit Whichbook

There is a subreddit for everything under the sun and so is there one for book recommendations. The best part about subreddits is that you can join multiple communities which can fall between both generic and niche topics. Apart from that, you can post about the books you are looking for, ask for recommendations, and discuss the book’s storyline. Here are some book recommendation subreddits you can check out.

  • Suggest Me A Book
  • Book Suggestions
  • Books (in-depth discussions)
  • The Reddit Book Club (one/two book a month)
  • Audiobooks (Audible users)
  • 52 Book Challenge (one book a week challenge)

If you wish to discuss a specific genre and can’t find a subreddit for it, you can simply create a Reddit community (subreddit) in a few easy steps.

6. BookSloth

Android doesn’t have a lot of book recommendation apps but BookSloth is one of the few good ones. It’s a fairly simple app and you start by choosing your favorite genres such as biographies, crime, fiction, etc. Once you are done choosing a genre (at least 3 or more), the app asks you to choose reading elements.

Book recommendation app on Android

The app also allows you to connect to other readers natively with its community section. You can share your favorite books, take part in discussions, follow others and also check out their book recommendations. One issue I faced while using the app is a dead recommendation page. Even after selecting multiple filters, the app didn’t show any result in the discover section. Keeping that aside, if you are in for a book community and want to see what others are reading, this is a must-try.

  • Allows you to make a unique profile
  • Sections on book recommendation, reading, to read, etc
  • Sports Instagram like social community
  • Discover section often failed to suggest books
  • Can’t verify other users or their recommendations
  • App focus more on user-generated content

Get BookSloth for ( iOS | Android )

7. Goodreads

So I saved the best one for the last. Goodreads is a one-stop-shop for all your reading woes. Since Amazon acquired Goodreads , the app has seen an increase in the number of users. Goodread’s Kindle integration also makes it a convenient choice for Kindle users.

Goodreads app user interface

You can search for books by genre and also set a yearly goal for the number of books you wish to read. The only downside is that the recommendations take time. The app has a steep learning curve and it recommends good books once you have rated a fair number of books. So the more books you rate, the chances of getting a quality recommendation also shoots up. Goodreads are great for organizing your books. The shelves section allows you to add books that you are currently reading and also helps you make a wishlist.

  • Large database of books
  • Allows you to add tags to books
  • Syncs Kindle notes and highlights
  • Allows search and scan books
  • Limited sign-in options
  • Takes reviews to make a good recommendation list.

Get Goodreads for ( iOS | Android )

Closing Remarks: Which Book Recommendation Sites or Apps Should You Choose

In my opinion, there are far more tools for the web when we look at book recommendations. I highly recommend using Whichbook as it offers plenty of filters when you are searching for a book. On the other hand, if you have some particular needs such as a book that doesn’t have its main character or simply a supernatural series , Reddit should be on top of your list. Lastly, if you wish to use an app, install Goodreads.

With technology on the rise, it only makes sense for other old-fashioned methods of entertainment to catch up — including books. Nowadays, you can find your favorite books converted into all sorts of digital formats. Book apps have been taking the digital world by storm and acting as more than just a solution for lugging around heavy books.

Despite paperbacks being the original method of reading, e-reading apps can offer multiple benefits to readers, including the ability to read at any time and anywhere while on the go. You can also have a dictionary and convenient search features at your fingertips, which means you’ll be more likely to learn multiple things while reading an e-book. E-book apps also customize your reading experience according to your tastes — visually and physically.

Look no further if you’ve been looking for the best book app for iPhone or Android. In this article, you can learn all about the leading apps for reading books online and through the convenience of your personal device.

Key points:

Book apps offer a convenient method of reading books without having to take up extra space in your bag. Not only are paperless books often considered better for the environment, but they can also have exclusive digital features that make the e-reading experience much easier and smoother than reading a paperback.

Downloading a book app that works for you should be based on your personal needs and preferences. For instance, you can choose from various apps that offer different features like offline downloading and customizable interfaces. The best book apps worth checking out include Headway, Bluefire Reader, and Prolific Works.

Many people have busy lifestyles that prevent them from enjoying a full-length book. In this case, Headway is a great app for book lovers who want to continue reading while on the go. With this app, you can gain all the same information from a book in only 15 minutes.

Top 10 best apps to read books

Reading apps offer a solution for carrying all your books in one convenient, easy-to-use location. Here are some of the app store’s highest-rated selections to help you choose the best app for reading books.

One of the most definable features of ReadEra is its ability to handle books in any format, including PDF, ePUB, and MS Word. The app also conveniently finds all compatible files already on your device and adds them to your library. It also has adjustable settings to help you customize your reading experience according to your desired color, font size, line spacing, and more.

Luckily, the free version of the app includes no ads or pushy internal purchases. However, you can still choose to upgrade to a premium app version that unlocks exclusive features like additional colors, convenient book thumbnails, and full-screen mode. Both free and premium versions of ReadEra let you read books offline, so you can easily take your bookshelf with you while on the go. The downside to ReadEra is that it’s only available for Android users, so you’re out of luck if you have an iPhone.

This reading app supports most e-book formats and is available on most devices, including iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac OS. The Bluefire interface has features that enhance your reading experience, including bookmarking, notes, and customization settings. This app makes it easy to treat your digital book like a paper book. For example, you can annotate and highlight parts of the e-book and return to it later.

It also helps you discover a new range of authors and book genres with exclusive giveaways and promotional freebie reads. As well as downloading e-books from your favorite authors, you can also share your own writing on the app.

This app provides a convenient system where writers can connect with readers to promote their work and engage with fans. Both counterparts receive benefits — writers get their books out there for the world to read, while readers can access thousands of free e-books. Prolific Works also gives you exclusive access to sneak peeks and advance previews of your favorite books.

Either way, the best reading app is completely up to you.

Why should I download a book-reading app?

Book-reading apps can offer benefits to both avid readers and non-readers. These platforms provide a way to keep all your books in one convenient location to be taken with you. On the other hand, non-readers can also take advantage of book apps by using them to listen to audiobooks and podcasts on their favorite topics to boost productivity.

What is the difference between e-books and physical books?

The main difference between e-books and physical books is obvious — one is digital, and one is not. However, there are key differences between the two that can change the way you read your books. For example, physical books are easy on the eyes and don’t require charging, while e-books are known for their versatility and convenience.

Which book app is best for offline use?

The best book app for offline use is subjective to the kind of app you are looking for. Several book apps allow you to download books from your shelf to use offline. This includes Headway and ReadEra. However, ReadEra is only available to Android users, while Headway is available for download on iOS and Android platforms.

Track Your Reading And Discover New Books With The 6 Best Book Apps

F inding new hobbies can help improve your mental health ; they're exciting and stimulating. When you engage in a new activity, you reduce your stress levels, allowing you to enjoy the task. There are hundreds of hobbies you can get into, but if you've scrolled through TikTok, you might've seen users post all about the books they're reading and the apps they use to track them. Even if you haven't picked up a book since high school, BookTok can persuade you to read at least one. After you finish one, you'll want to read them all. Keeping track of books you've read helps remind you which ones you've already completed, especially when looking for something new to read at Barnes and Noble.

Moreover, reading tracking apps are all designed differently to make your reading journey more fun. They're excellent at making recommendations based on your past or current reads, which is perfect if you're in a book slump. You can browse through all the books, read their synopsis, and list the ones you'd want to read in the future. Since every reading track is different, we made a list of the top six best book apps you'll want to download.

Goodreads is the most popular reading tracking app that allows you to set annual reading goals if you decide to read more as part of your new year's resolutions. Even without a plan, you can still track the books you read throughout the months. Goodreads is available for Android and iOS. It's a standard, user-friendly app that categorizes your books into three sections: "want to read," "currently reading," and "read." You can switch them from category to category as you read your books. When you finish reading a book, you can rate it up to five stars and see other people's ratings. The home page lists books trending that week in your most-read genres and new recommendations.

A worldwide community on Goodreads lets you interact and meet new people. You can also follow people's profiles and see what's on their reading list to give you more recommendations if you enjoy the same genres. As you scroll through the discovery tab, you'll see suggestions based on your current book, what people have been reading most, trending books, and new releases.

Regarding tracking, you can mark the page you left off, and the app will let you know how much of the book you've read by percentage. In addition, you can link your Goodreads to your Kindle to gain access to your notes and highlights.

If you want to dive deep into the book world, Basmo has you covered. It's different from most book-tracking apps because it helps you to improve your reading habits while tracking your books. It's available for Android and iOS. When you sign up for the app, you're asked questions about your favorite genres, reading desires and preferences, your reading goal, books you've read, etc. Basmo also has an intelligence feature where you can start a BookChat with AI and have an in-depth conversation about a book you've read to make you feel more connected to the story.

Basmo monitors how long it takes to finish a book, and you can create a reading schedule to ensure you meet your goals. Additionally, the app has many features to enhance your reading skills. For example, you can highlight parts of the book that speak to you or jot down any notes you thought about while reading.

However, to get every feature included in the app, you need a premium subscription that's $39.99 for 12 months. Or, you can get less than half the benefits for $4.99 a month. The basic membership allows you to plan reading sessions, get reminders, and take notes, but it doesn't track your reading time. A downside to Basmo is that it has no reading or social community you can join to meet other readers.

One of the more aesthetically pleasing book apps is Tertulia , with its black and white background and swoopy script. It's only available for iOS users but will come on Android soon. When you sign up for the app, it asks questions about your reading preferences, such as the types of books you want to see. Moreover, the app asks who you want to hear more from regarding your chosen genres. For example, if you picked poetry, mystery, and romance, you could ask to hear more from poets, authors, book critics, or people you follow on Twitter. Then, Tertulia will create a list of recommended books; you can also find reading options that catch your fancy.

Tertulia is easy to navigate; they have one tab that holds all of the books you're currently reading, have read, want to read, and have shared with others. In addition, you can keep track of all the books you plan to read throughout the year. While you can't rate your reads once you've finished them, the app scans discussions and uploads them mainly from Twitter so you can see what books people are talking about.

The free app gives you many book suggestions based on your preferences. You can purchase books in the app, and if you're a member, you get 10% off books and free shipping.

One of the more diverse book apps is StoryGraph . While it syncs your books from Goodreads, it offers endless recommendations based on books you've read and your mood. In addition, it has a myriad of reading challenges you can join rather than sticking to a reading goal. For example, one challenge is reading a book from ten different countries, where you read a book set in a country where the author originates. It allows you to broaden your geography skills and learn about new cultures and places. Otherwise, you can create a specific reading, page, or hours goal. As you finish books, they'll pop up in a pie chart, and at the bottom of the tab, there's a bar graph that keeps track of the number of books and pages you've read.

As for the rating feature, StoryGraph allows you to rate books on a quarter system instead of whole stars. So, you could give a book a 4.2-star rating rather than a solid 4-star or 5-star rating. Furthermore, when you rate your books, the app can recommend them to someone with your reading preferences. For example, if you claim that the book you read is ideal for those looking for a slow-burn, spicy novel, it'll be recommended to someone interested in the same genre. It's available for Android and iOS devices.

Bookshelf is another great book-tracking app that motivates you to achieve your reading goals  -- it's available for iOS devices. When you first open the app, it asks you what your goal is and lets you sync books on your Goodreads and Reading List. You can also browse books to add to your To-Be-Read (TBR). The app has three different tabs, books, cards, and stats. The books tab is where you create your library and add books to your TBR, currently reading, or read categories. There's also an abandoned tab where you can add any books you don't want to continue reading.

The cards tab consists of different decks that help you remember what you've read. You can create flashcards to quiz you or write notes on impactful books. Moreover, you can add multiple cards to a collection to review them daily. The last tab is stats: reading periods, completed books, the number of pages you read per session, your average reading speed, etc. The downside is the app doesn't have any social communities you can join and talk to about books, so it's best for those who want to focus strictly on reaching their reading goals.

TBR Bookshelf

TBR Bookshelf is the book-tracking app every BookTok worm uses. It has many cool features that make tracking your books fun. You can keep track of all your TBR books in the designated tab, and once you finish a book, you'll see it placed in one of the slots on your goal tab. When you sign up for the app, you're automatically given a reading goal of 25 books, but you can adjust your goal in the settings. All of your "TBRs," "currently reading," and "have read books," are divided into individual tabs instead of being in the same section.

TBR Bookshelf has one interesting feature: when you're done reading a book, you can give it multiple ratings instead of one. For example, if you read a romance novel, you can give ratings based on spice, fluff, tear, and humor. After rating those categories, there are other sections for you to reflect on who your favorite character was, your favorite quotes, and your overall thoughts on the book.

The app also offers a monthly subscription service for $4.99, giving you access to other features, like the book's tropes. You can also choose a six-month plan for $19.99 or a yearly plan for $29.99. Unfortunately, there isn't a social community, but it still has an organized, user-friendly layout.

Google’s Gemini is now in everything. Here’s how you can try it out.

Gmail, Docs, and more will now come with Gemini baked in. But Europeans will have to wait before they can download the app.

  • Will Douglas Heaven archive page

In the biggest mass-market AI launch yet, Google is rolling out Gemini , its family of large language models, across almost all its products, from Android to the iOS Google app to Gmail to Docs and more. You can also now get your hands on Gemini Ultra, the most powerful version of the model, for the first time.

With this launch, Google is sunsetting Bard , the company's answer to ChatGPT. Bard, which has been powered by a version of Gemini since December, will now be known as Gemini too.

ChatGPT , released by Microsoft-backed OpenAI just 14 months ago, changed people’s expectations of what computers could do. Google, which has been racing to catch up ever since, unveiled its Gemini family of models in December. They are multimodal large language models that can interact with you via voice, image, and text. Google claimed that its own benchmarking showed that Gemini could outperform OpenAI's multimodal model, GPT-4, on a range of standard tests. But the margins were slim.

By baking Gemini into its ubiquitous products, Google is hoping to make up lost ground. “Every launch is big, but this one is the biggest yet,” Sissie Hsiao, Google vice president and general manager of Google Assistant and Bard (now Gemini), said in a press conference yesterday. “We think this is one of the most profound ways that we’re going to advance our company’s mission.”

But some will have to wait longer than others to play with Google’s new toys. The company has announced rollouts in the US and East Asia but said nothing about when the Android and iOS apps will come to the UK or the rest of Europe. This may be because the company is waiting for the EU’s new AI Act to be set in stone, says Dragoș Tudorache, a Romanian politician and member of the European Parliament, who was a key negotiator on the law.

“We’re working with local regulators to make sure that we’re abiding by local regime requirements before we can expand,” Hsiao said. “Rest assured, we are absolutely working on it and I hope we’ll be able to announce expansion very, very soon.”

How can you get it? Gemini Pro, Google’s middle-tier model that has been available via Bard since December, will continue to be available for free on the web at gemini.google.com (rather than bard.google.com). But now there is a mobile app as well.

If you have an Android device, you can either download the Gemini app or opt in to an upgrade in Google Assistant. This will let you call up Gemini in the same way that you use Google Assistant: by pressing the power button, swiping from the corner of the screen, or saying “Hey, Google!” iOS users can download the Google app, which will now include Gemini.

Gemini will pop up as an overlay on your screen, where you can ask it questions or give it instructions about whatever’s on your phone at the time, such as summarizing an article or generating a caption for a photo.

Finally, Google is launching a paid-for service called Gemini Advanced. This comes bundled in a subscription costing $19.99 a month that the company is calling the Google One Premium AI Plan. It combines the perks of the existing Google One Premium Plan, such as 2TB of extra storage, with access to Google's most powerful model, Gemini Ultra, for the first time. This will compete with OpenAI’s paid-for service, ChatGPT Plus, which buys you access to the more powerful GPT-4 (rather than the default GPT-3.5) for $20 a month.

At some point soon (Google didn't say exactly when) this subscription will also unlock Gemini across Google’s Workspace apps like Docs, Sheets, and Slides, where it works as a smart assistant similar to the GPT-4-powered Copilot that Microsoft is trialing in Office 365.

When can you get it? The free Gemini app (powered by Gemini Pro) is available from today in English in the US. Starting next week, you’ll be able to access it across the Asia Pacific region in English and in Japanese and Korean. But there is no word on when the app will come to the UK, countries in the EU, or Switzerland.

Gemini Advanced (the paid-for service that gives access to Gemini Ultra) is available in English in more than 150 countries, including the UK and EU (but not France). Google says it is analyzing local requirements and fine-tuning Gemini for cultural nuance in different countries. But the company promises that more languages and regions are coming.

What can you do with it? Google says it has developed its Gemini products with the help of more than 100 testers and power users. At the press conference yesterday, Google execs outlined a handful of use cases, such as getting Gemini to help write a cover letter for a job application. “This can help you come across as more professional and increase your relevance to recruiters,” said Google’s vice president for product management, Kristina Behr.

Or you could take a picture of your flat tire and ask Gemini how to fix it. A more elaborate example involved Gemini managing a snack rota for the parents of kids on a soccer team. Gemini would come up with a schedule for who should bring snacks and when, help you email other parents, and then field their replies. In future versions, Gemini will be able to draw on data in your Google Drive that could help manage carpooling around game schedules, Behr said.

But we should expect people to come up with a lot more uses themselves. “I’m really excited to see how people around the world are going to push the envelope on this AI,” Hsaio said.

Is it safe? Google has been working hard to make sure its products are safe to use. But no amount of testing can anticipate all the ways that tech will get used and misused once it is released. In the last few months, Meta saw people use its image-making app to produce pictures of Mickey Mouse with guns and SpongeBob SquarePants flying a jet into two towers. Others used Microsoft’s image-making software to create fake pornographic images of Taylor Swift .

The AI Act aims to mitigate some—but not all—of these problems. For example, it requires the makers of powerful AI like Gemini to build in safeguards, such as watermarking for generated images and steps to avoid reproducing copyrighted material. Google says that all images generated by its products will include its SynthID watermarks.

Like most companies, Google was knocked onto the back foot when ChatGPT arrived. Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI has given it a boost over its old rival. But with Gemini, Google has come back strong: this is the slickest packaging of this generation’s tech yet.

Fake and Explicit Images of Taylor Swift Started on 4chan, Study Says

The people on 4chan who created the images of Ms. Swift thought of it as a sort of game, the researchers said.

Images of Taylor Swift that had been generated by artificial intelligence and had spread widely across social media in late January probably originated as part of a recurring challenge on one of the internet’s most notorious message boards , according to a new report.

Listen to This Article

Open this article in the New York Times Audio app on iOS.

Graphika, a research firm that studies disinformation, traced the images back to one community on 4chan, a message board known for sharing hate speech, conspiracy theories and, increasingly, racist and offensive content created using A.I.

The people on 4chan who created the images of the singer did so in a sort of game, the researchers said — a test to see whether they could create lewd (and sometimes violent) images of famous female figures.

The synthetic Swift images spilled out onto other platforms and were viewed millions of times . Fans rallied to Ms. Swift’s defense, and lawmakers demanded stronger protections against A.I.-created images.

Graphika found a thread of messages on 4chan that encouraged people to try to evade safeguards set up by image generator tools, including OpenAI’s DALL-E, Microsoft Designer and Bing Image Creator. Users were instructed to share “tips and tricks to find new ways to bypass filters” and were told, “Good luck, be creative.”

Sharing unsavory content via games allows people to feel connected to a wider community, and they are motivated by the cachet they receive for participating, experts said. Ahead of the midterm elections in 2022, groups on platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp and Truth Social engaged in a hunt for election fraud, winning points or honorary titles for producing supposed evidence of voter malfeasance. (True proof of ballot fraud is exceptionally rare .)

In the 4chan thread that led to the fake images of Ms. Swift, several users received compliments — “beautiful gen anon,” one wrote — and were asked to share the prompt language used to create the images. One user lamented that a prompt produced an image of a celebrity who was clad in a swimsuit rather than nude.

Rules posted by 4chan that apply sitewide do not specifically prohibit sexually explicit A.I.-generated images of real adults.

“These images originated from a community of people motivated by the ‘challenge’ of circumventing the safeguards of generative A.I. products, and new restrictions are seen as just another obstacle to ‘defeat,’” Cristina López G., a senior analyst at Graphika, said in a statement. “It’s important to understand the gamified nature of this malicious activity in order to prevent further abuse at the source.”

Ms. Swift is “far from the only victim,” Ms. López G. said. In the 4chan community that manipulated her likeness, many actresses, singers and politicians were featured more frequently than Ms. Swift.

OpenAI said in a statement that the explicit images of Ms. Swift were not generated using its tools, noting that it filters out the most explicit content when training its DALL-E model. The company also said it uses other safety guardrails, such as denying requests that ask for a public figure by name or seek explicit content.

Microsoft said that it was “continuing to investigate these images” and added that it had “strengthened our existing safety systems to further prevent our services from being misused to help generate images like them.” The company prohibits users from using its tools to create adult or intimate content without consent and warns repeat offenders that they may be blocked.

Fake pornography generated with software has been a blight since at least 2017, affecting unwilling celebrities , government figures , Twitch streamers , students and others. Patchy regulation leaves few victims with legal recourse; even fewer have a devoted fan base to drown out fake images with coordinated “Protect Taylor Swift” posts.

After the fake images of Ms. Swift went viral, Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, called the situation “alarming” and said lax enforcement by social media companies of their own rules disproportionately affected women and girls. She said the Justice Department had recently funded the first national helpline for people targeted by image-based sexual abuse, which the department described as meeting a “rising need for services” related to the distribution of intimate images without consent. SAG-AFTRA , the union representing tens of thousands of actors, called the fake images of Ms. Swift and others a “theft of their privacy and right to autonomy.”

Artificially generated versions of Ms. Swift have also been used to promote scams involving Le Creuset cookware . A.I. was used to impersonate President Biden’s voice in robocalls dissuading voters from participating in the New Hampshire primary election. Tech experts say that as A.I. tools become more accessible and easier to use, audio spoofs and videos with realistic avatars could be created in mere minutes.

Researchers said the first sexually explicit A.I. image of Ms. Swift on the 4chan thread appeared on Jan. 6, 11 days before they were said to have appeared on Telegram and 12 days before they emerged on X. 404 Media reported on Jan. 25 that the viral Swift images had jumped into mainstream social media platforms from 4chan and a Telegram group dedicated to abusive images of women. The British news organization Daily Mail reported that week that a website known for sharing sexualized images of celebrities posted the Swift images on Jan. 15.

For several days, X blocked searches for Taylor Swift “with an abundance of caution so we can make sure that we were cleaning up and removing all imagery,” said Joe Benarroch, the company’s head of business operations.
