What will I learn?

Is it your dream to work in the game industry? In our game programme, one of the best in the world, you learn how to make interesting, attractive and, above all, playable games.

Whether you want to be the best game play programmer, an award winning character artist or a Triple-A title winning producer, your path to success starts at International Game Architecture and Design in Breda.

In this programme you will be trained in creative, technological, and commercial skills. Game careers require you to have both a broad knowledge of game development and deep skills in your chosen area of expertise, such as 3D visual arts, high-end video game development, animation, audio, gameplay, level design, production, or programming.

Role based learning The educational structure of this programme is Role Based Learning (RBL) and is based on Project Based Learning (PBL). This is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills in their chosen role by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem, or challenge. The focus is on facilitating students to become self-driven learners that can analyse a problem and use all the resources around them to find solutions.

During your four years of study you will work in a simulated game development studio on different game projects. The majority of your time will be spent working on projects either individually or in groups, and attending workshops.

When you first enter the programme, you choose one of the study paths. During the second year you can switch paths to become a ‘general developer’ with mixed skills, or you can stay in your specialisation for the remaining projects.

  • 3D Visual Art delivers 3D modellers, animators, character artists and environment artists for the games and film industries. This study path teaches 3D modelling, texturing, rendering, drawing, animation and world building. 3D Visual Art is popular with students who have artistic skills and a passion for visual arts in a gaming context as well as a drive to understand the technical skills required to make assets that work smoothly in a game engine.
  • Programming delivers hardware and software engineers for the gaming industries, including console, PC, and mobile platforms. This study path teaches mathematics, C++, hardware technology, game programming, graphics programming, and mobile and social network technologies.
  • Design & Production delivers game designers, level designers, narrative designers, and producers for the gaming industries, including console, mobile, PC, and board games. This study path teaches you concept development, game design, game production, business management, interactive storytelling, and basic programming and computer graphics. Design & Production is very popular with students who have leadership and conceptual aspirations for the games industry and who have strong communication skills.

If you already have a vwo diploma, a ‘Hochschulreifezeugnis’ (Abitur) or a comparable pre-education, Creative Media and Game Technologies may be able to offer you the opportunity of completing the programme in just three years.

After your bachelor

As a graduate you will be equipped to enter a variety of programmer, design and visual artist related careers. In addition to the regular positions within the (console-based) games industry there are opportunities in the field of film special effects (VFX), web-based games and mobile games development.

The Bachelor Programme International Game Architecture and Design offers good transfer opportunities to (inter)national master programmes in the field of gaming.

What British students in the course say

Samuel Gilbert

About the course

/images/universities/BUAS_Games_Top_Rated_Programme.jpg

What is the ‘success factor’ of the computer game 'World of Warcraft' or ‘Call of Duty’? Why do people find themselves glued to their computer screens for hours on end trying to master the latest game? Why do other games simply not catch on? How do you create a unique selling point for a game concept? What does it take to make a game become a commercial success?

Are you the programmer, the game designer, the visual artist or the technologist who knows the answers to these questions? Can you create the magic of new games?

Candidate profile

You are enthusiastic and passionate about game development. You are creative, have good drawing and computer skills, have a sense of aesthetics. You are work minded in a commercial way. Whether you work in the games industry or in related fields such as companies developing user interfaces or animations studios, working long hours is the rule rather than the exception.

Study programme

During your four years of study you will work in a simulated game development studio on different game projects. The majority of your time will be spent working on projects either individually or in groups, and attending workshops.

The first year consists of three blocks of basic skills that build towards tightly defined projects to enhance your knowledge, all supported by lectures and seminars.

Second year

Year 2 consists of four blocks. You spend two blocks further developing your basic skills in your chosen role. In the other two blocks, you work in small multidisciplinary teams building game projects, supported by lectures and seminars.

This year you specialise in your chosen role either working in a multidisciplinary team on a year-long game project or in a smaller specialist team supporting the game project.

Fourth year

In the graduation year you work on two projects that may include:

  • a portfolio project individually or in a group (always assessed individually);
  • working at a company (with a project deliverable);
  • developing a business plan and designing a product (to start your own company, supported by our entrepreneurship start-up specialists);
  • taking part in a one-semester exchange programme at our partner universities.

We encourage our students to go abroad during their study. In year 4, students participate in projects at companies around the world.

Important Note

BUAS applies a selection procedure as it admits a limited number of students. BUAS is allowed to select 100% of its own students.

For the academic year of 2018-2019, a maximum of 180 students will be admitted to the International Game Architecture and Design programme.

The deadline for applications is 15th January. We strongly advise you to apply as soon as possible. You can find out more by visiting the BUAS website .

IGAD Graduate Success Story

Tessa El Miligi, IGAD graduate

1. What is the official name of your current job and what does it entail?

I am an Animation Fixer on the first 3D animated feature film adaptation of Asterix and Obelix. The job entails taking shots received from the animation department and performing animation clean-up on those shots. Occasionally I'm also involved in the supervision, management, and training of the Animation Fix team.

Previously, after graduation, I worked as a Lighting Artist on Knack, a Playstation 4 release title.

2. How would you describe the Digital Art programme you followed at BUAS?

The programme gave me the best possible preparation for the industry I could imagine. Not only did the programme teach me the practical skills I needed to make it in the industry, but it also gave a solid foundation from day one in terms of professional attitude and perseverance that now enables me to get ahead.

3. When you look back, do you think studying at BUAS was the right thing for you?

The degree course at BUAS was a Godsend in terms of my future. As a kid I was always fascinated by game development and later realised it was what I really wanted to do.  I had no idea how to make such a thing happen.

The International Game Design & Architecture programme at BUAS made the impossible possible, and to this day I think it was the best decision I could’ve made.

Within the first 7 weeks of starting the programme I learnt more than I ever could’ve learned by myself over a span of several years, and to this day still use many of the lessons learnt.

4. In what way are your BUAS studies linked to your current job?

When I started at BUAS I discovered that animation is my passion, and although I still love games I can’t help but appreciate the immense amount of work that goes into feature film animation.

Over time I realised that digital animation and art is the field I wanted to work in. Despite being a games course the International Game Architecture and Design degree programme is taught to such a high level that it’s possible to focus on the field of film and animation, should students want to do this, which was what happened in my case.

After completing Knack I was offered a job doing animation clean-up for Asterix, which was a great opportunity for me.

5. Can you describe your average working day?

Usually when I arrive at work I have a number of shots to process. We've set up a system that allows the team to easily see which shots have priority over others so that the team always knows what comes first. On average we process about 2-4 shots a day per person depending on the difficulty of the shot. This difficulty depends on a number of factors, including the length of the shot, framing of the shot, the number of characters in the shot, the weight of those characters, and the amount of movement coming from those characters. There are a number of issues I have to fix such as on-screen intersections that could break the suspension of disbelief, off-screen intersections that are needed for more technical reasons, as well as making tweaks in the animation where they might be needed.

6. What is your best memory of BUAS and your stay in Breda?

One of the best memories of BUAS are the students and the lecturers (as well as Breda being a great city to live in!). The lecturers are passionate about what they do and as a result have many of the same interests as the students. This often makes the class much more interesting, informative and often funnier than one would often expect from a typical day of classes.

7. What tips would you give prospective students who have to make the difficult decision about where/what to study?

From my experience I'd say decide for yourself what it is you'd really love to do, regardless of people’s opinions on it or whether or not you think it's possible. Once you decide what it is you love doing pursue it without question. Make sacrifices if you have to, to realise your dream. The chances are you’ll love doing it for many years to come, no matter how small or big that thing is.

U of Regina students in creative technologies and design programs have new degree, diploma options

Creative technologies and design program offers 2-year diploma and 4-year degree.

Two girls stand, arms pointed in different directions. They both have on a virtual reality goggles headset with controllers in both hands.

Social Sharing

The University of Regina announced Friday that students in the expanded creative technologies and design programs will now have the opportunity to explore new degree and diploma options.

"Creative technologies and design is ideal for students who really have an interest in sort of the connections between art, design, technology and culture," said Charity Marsh, a media professor and coordinator for the program.

"You can be practice-based in your study and you can think theoretically about it. You learn to think about technology and the arts in new ways."

The diploma in creative technologies is a two-year program offered through the faculty of media, art and performance. Courses completed from the diploma can also go toward receiving a creative technologies and design degree, which is a four-year program.

The program's aim is to help students develop technical skills across a variety of formats that are adapting amid technological changes. The faculty prides itself on its small class sizes and hands-on projects that students can work on collaboratively.

Art and technology

Students will dabble in a range of platforms including virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D animation, robotics, digital storytelling, AI and computer game design.

"VR is certainly about education and learning and we know that we see virtual reality being used, for example, in medical and health studies," said Marsh.

"Students from all different areas come together and they learn to sort of talk across the disciplinary languages. They learn to talk to each other and build and make together and they push each other, right, in different kinds of ways that are really important for the learning process."

Two girls are standing, one is holding an ipad and filming the other student.

The University of Regina was the first university in Canada to originally launch a creative technologies program. The new degree programs are unique in Saskatchewan and across the Prairie provinces.

"It's a really exciting time for students to be in creative technologies and design at the University of Regina. We are just taking on all of these new technologies and even old technologies and just being innovative and curious and experimenting and really being playful," Marsh said.

  • Virtual reality improves reality for northern Indigenous students
  • UNB using virtual reality to help train LPNs to become RNs without having to relocate

David Dick, dean of the faculty of media, art and performance, says the addition of the program will open many doors for future careers.

"Our students are serious about gaining skills as artists, developers, designers, scientists, theorists, entrepreneurs and practice-based scholars," Dick said in a news release issued Friday.

"They learn to think about technology and the arts in new ways, and thrive in the exploration of digital culture."

The creative technologies program is interdisciplinary, meaning it is open not only to MAP students, but to those in other areas of study too, such as students in computer science, engineering and arts.

"Students explore digital culture while working in and with interactive media and installation," said Marsh.
