Gaza Writes Back: Narrating Palestine; In Palestine, stories are sacred. In trying times, we turn to story-telling for solace. Mothers and grandmothers are the major source of stories in the families. And just when you are old enough, you realise that you have been shaped by these stories and that they go far beyond entertainment. As a Palestinian, I have been brought up on stories, and I learned early in my life that it is both selfish and treacherous to keep a story to myself. If I allowed a story to stop, I would be betraying my legacy, my mother, my grandmother, and my homeland. This essay describes the creation of a collection of stories by young Palestinian authors that whet the much-needed talent for a life of struggle, resistance, representation.

This manuscript describes how innovative literacy practices such as multigenre writing and artifactual critical literacy have been used to tap into pre-service teachers' cultural identities while responding to literature. In the process of responding to literature, personal experience is crucial; therefore, in this study, I focused on the relationship between that personal experience and cultural identity. The multigenre writings or artifact narratives of pre-service teachers in response to realistic fiction books became extensions of those real-life stories and provided information about the students' cultural background. Thus, the study also investigates the possibilities these new tools offer for intercultural learning.

Scenarios are stories. In the diverse field of scenario planning, this is perhaps the single point of universal agreement. Yet if scenarios are stories, their literary qualities are often underdeveloped. Scenarios used in business and government frequently do not contain a relatable protagonist, move a plot toward resolution, or compellingly use metaphor, imagery, or other emotionally persuasive techniques of literature. In these cases, narrative is relegated to an adjunct role of summarizing the final results of the workshop. While this neglect of narrative may be reasonable in some contexts, the power of narrative should not be underestimated. Scenario planning methodologies can benefit from using diverse narrative techniques to craft compelling and infectious visions of the future. This article explores the relationship between science fiction and scenarios as story genres and investigates a creative story-telling technique, “Science Fiction Prototyping” (Johnson, 2011). While the method is promising, it is an ultimately problematic means to incorporating narrative into scenario planning.

Since the publication of Australia’s first crime novel in 1830, Australians have read crime fiction for entertainment, for the reassurance that wrongdoers will be punished, and to test their deductive skills against those of their favourite sleuth. The novels, short stories and plays within the crime fiction genre that have been produced in Australia between colonial times and the present day also offer opportunities to investigate a particular place or a particular time. Indeed, many crime fiction writers have mastered the art of recreating settings in both rural and metropolitan landscapes. The details provided within these works ultimately reveal a culprit (usually a murderer), yet they also outline the availability of certain products, bus and train timetables, the floor plans of local hotels or world-famous buildings and numerous other particulars, thus providing a rich, if surprising, source of material for the merely curious and the professional researcher. Crime fiction stories set within libraries present a history of the information services profession. This paper demonstrates how crime fiction can provide an important supplement to more traditional historical sources, with a focus on how the genre has documented some of the major changes within libraries over the last 75 years, since 1939.

Honours thesis completed at the University of Melbourne in 2015. Gerald Murnane has been, for some forty years, trying to describe his life through fiction. After ‘giving up’ publishing in 1995, he began again with the novel Barley Patch in 2009, and later came to write a work called A History of Books (2012), followed by his latest novel A Million Windows (2014). Critical response to Murnane’s earlier fiction (before his break) often positioned him within the tradition of post-modern literary theory, particularly deconstructionist accounts of language. His recent fiction, with its ever spiralling self-referential nature, may only encourage this response. However, when Murnane’s work is read against some of his favourite author’s, Emily Brontë, Marcel Proust and Henry James, the fiction speaks of a different methodology. While his work may respond to Derridian readings, it comes alive when compared to Brontë’s paracosmic imagination, Proust’s theory of art, and the circular regeneration of James’ late writing. By looking back at Murnane’s predecessors, we can better see how the most inward of writers imagines the landscape of his fiction.
