The last month i.e., October ,2008 came with a message of hardships, sufferings and challenges from nature. My city Lucknow experienced heavy monsoon rains. The purpose of a report is often to present relevant information in an ordered way and to make carefully considered suggestions based on that information.

Reports are usually a mixture of fact and opinion, reflecting on key facts and details to offer suggestions to the reader.

Reports can also be used to offer an objective view of a situation, proposing alternatives for the reader to consider.

For example, reports in a workplace might include statistics to support different plans for the future of the business so that people can decide on the best option.

The audience of a report is often someone in charge, for example a teacher, or an employer, so the language and tone of a report tends to be more formal.

  • think about the audience that the report is for – are you writing this report for one reader, or for a group of people such as the organisers of an event?
  • the impression you want your reader to have of you – usually a report should be impersonal and relatively formal since you are writing to someone who is in charge. You would not normally use slang or contractions ( such as don’t or can’t) .It is usually best to avoid attempts at humour or sarcasm
  • the purpose for the report – you may have been asked to make suggestions or recommendations in your report based on personal experience, or to offer an overview of a more complex situation. Try to include a range of topic related vocabulary used appropriately
  • how to reassure your reader that your report is going to be useful – i magine if your report was full of emotive words and personal appeals based on your own viewpoint, your reader might not be convinced that you were offering them an objective and accurate evaluation. For your report to be effective you will need to sound calm and polite.
  • Identify and group the key information, facts and details your report needs to include before you start writing – the structure of a report is usually in three parts. For example:
  • An overview – briefly introduce the topic of the report and the key areas you will consider. Your reader should be able to understand what you will be writing about and why by just reading this section.
  • A middle – develop and support the relevant facts and opinions about the topic that you or others have noticed.
  • An end – offer a brief summary of your suggestions, recommendations or solutions. Here you might like to include any new points you think should be considered in the future .
  • Organise different aspects of the report into paragraphs as appropriate – this will help you to explain, develop and support your points.
  • Help your reader to locate the information they need more easily – a report should be well-organised and clear. Reports often use headings to show the reader what information can be found in each section. Sometimes bullet points might also be used to highlight key information to the reader. Do not overdo these, but a precise, short, bulleted list can help to draw your reader’s attention to the key points you are making.
  • Connect the points you are making logically – for example, where you are offering suggestions based on points you made earlier you might use a linking word or phrase such as ‘in conclusion’, ‘as a consequence’ or ‘finally’.

Taking the factors mentioned into account, August would be the best time for the installation of air conditioning. Until then, the university could consider supplying fans to each second-floor room so students can sleep and study comfortably.

The front of the café is recommended as an ideal place to install a wheelchair ramp. This work can take place immediately and should be a priority.

Introduction This report aims to describe the main problems in the ordering process at the cafe and discuss possible solutions. The two most significant issues were discussed at the meeting last day, which was participated by members of the order team and managers.

Issue 1: Missing dishes Customers frequently complain about missing or incorrect dishes being delivered. Concerns were raised about customer dissatisfaction and the return ratio. Maintenance for building B2 in Gize area This report aims to describe problems in our building B2 and discuss the possible solutions and maintenance work to take place. The two biggest issues were discussed at the neighbors' meeting in 15 April which was attended by 20 neighbors out of 35 who live in the building Issue 1: fixed the water leakage from the bathroom in floor 7th A number of neighbors complained about water leakage from some floors which affected the safety of the building, concerning about the safety arise. replacing the old pipes with the new ones was suggested as a possible solution. However, there is no budget for replacing the pipes this month and replacement can not take place duo to the working day and the presence of neighbors. Issue 2 : lift doors arm broking It was noted the doors of the lift sometimes don't close because of the arm which causes the lift to be hung on on some floors, this creates a lot of problems for the residents of the building and lets them take the stare instead of the lift. We suggest replacing the old broking arm with a new one during the holidays as many residents will be on vacation. Recommendation The maintenance of the lift should take place as soon as possible. Fixed water leakage needs time and budget and a special contractor so the process should start immediately

Issue 1: insufficent space Even though the classrooms were intended for 10 students of class size, the number of students is increasing up to 15 at the moment so that the students cannot do the lessons very well due to the insufficent space. Consequently, the ventilation inside the room is not good.

Issue 2: improving bike rack It was noted that some students who come to class by bicycles parked their bikes in the sun where is not secured and the heat can disturb the bikes as well.

Conclusion and recomendations Classroom expansion should be taken into account the fact that large rooms are currently needed. Construction can be started at the beginning of Thingyan holiday.

The bike rack is recommended to do immediately since it is outside the class building and it should be a priority.

What is Report Writing? Report writing is writing an account of something that you have heard, seen, done or studied. It is something that is written for others to read. Thus, you may be asked to write reports to be put up on the notice board, to be published in the school magazine or to be sent to some other school for the students there to read. You may also be asked to write reports for news magazines, journals or newspapers. Report writing may be about projects or activities you or your class is involved in, or about happenings in and around your school. It may also be about local incidents.

Salient Features of a Report:

  • A report should be short (of about 150 words), terse and precise.
  • Only essential facts should be included.
  • Very often the Passive Voice is used (e.g., A survey of families in slum areas was conducted…, The police were called…, etc.).
  • The day of the occasion/incident/project, the time (if necessary) and the place should be mentioned.
  • Names or designations of important officials or guests involved should be mentioned.
  • Reasons for the success or failure of the happening should be given.

The visitors included middle-aged adults and old people. At around 5.30 p.m. the camp was closed. The students then helped the doctors and their assistants to prepare reports of the tests.

It was all done with great care and concentration. In all, 500 people had been diagnosed. Out of these, only 190 had normal vision. Most of the others suffered from nearsightedness or far-sightedness. There were 25 cases of glaucoma. The task was nearly completed at around 7.30 p.m. After a busy and hectic day, for us the experience was very helpful in developing our general understanding.

Answer: July 31, 2021 Exhibition on Health Care An exhibition on health care was held on the Model School grounds on July 29th. There were many stalls, some of which for free checkups. Many doctors volunteered to be a part of the Health Care camp. There was free testing of eyes. Stalls were taken care of by the students of the school. Here charts and models prepared entirely by students were put up. One was on dental care and another one was on diabetes.

There was an elaborate chart on physical fitness as well. The Chief Guest of the ceremony, Shri Guru Samant, was quite impressed by the efforts of the students and the school staff. He thought that this was a unique effort on the part of the school. The programme began at 8 a.m. and lasted till 6 p.m. More than 700 children and parents visited the exhibition. All in all, it was a grand success.

Question 5. Write a report of how your class celebrated Teacher’s Day’ to be put up on the school notice. board in about 150 words. Answer: September 7, 2020 Teachers’ Day Celebration This year, September 5 was special to us because we knew that Mrs Inamdar would be leaving school for good in a month’s time. As planned, four of us girls went early to school. We cleaned and tidied up the classroom. We put up charts and paintings about the teacher on the soft board. Some were made by us, some were made by the other boys and girls of the class. We decorated a vase with fresh flowers and kept it on the teacher’s table.

When our teacher walked in, we stood up and wished her ‘Happy Teacher’s Day. Then one ’ by one, some students gave her cards, some gave*her flowers. Nitin read out a poem 8n ‘My Teacher’. This brought tears into everyone’s eyes. When she told us to take out our books, we requested her not to teach.

So she sat down and Gauri, our class monitor, took the lesson. She made us read and asked questions. Then the bell rang. We greeted our teacher again. We gave all the other teachers flowers and cards that day. The students took the lessons in all classes. We thought that we should give our teachers rest at least for one day.

Answer: Vadodara, August 8 Selfie Mania among the youngsters Selfie is the latest fad among people, especially the younger generation. Whether you are at the railway station, restaurant, in the park or any other scenic or not so scenic place, you would come across youngsters clicking pictures of themselves, which are more commonly known as selfies.

Though these selfies are good for a person’s Facebook post, but there have been several instances where selfie-obsessed youngsters have severely injured themselves or even met their death while trying to take a selfie.

Oblivious of the surroundings, people have fallen to their death or have been run over by vehicles while in the process of taking a selfie. Some individuals have even gone a step ahead and attempted to take selfies at dangerous places or in difficult positions thereby meeting a gory end. Take for instance the recent case of Preeti Vaidya, a 17-year-old teenager. The girl was trying to take a selfie on the tetrapods at Marine Drive. The tide was high and it hit the girl pulling her into water. This is not an isolated case but many incidents have taken place in which precious lives have been lost.

In fact, it is young men who” are more prone to undertake dangerous selfie. A large number of selfies posted on twitter and come to the conclusion that 13 per cent of these were taken in dangerous situations. Alarmingly, a majority of these were young people falling under the age of 24. While in the world most people have died by falling of high buildings and mountain cliffs, in India most deaths have been water-related or near railway tracks. In the world of virtual reality, human bonds are weakening and the generation is becoming more prone to selfies.

Question 7. Your school received an award for ‘Swachha School’. Write a report for your school newsletter. Answer: Ahmedabad, September 7 “Akkad-bakkad-bambe-bo, sabse pehle hath dho.” A popular household game given a swachh twist by students of Vidyanagar High School in Ahmedabad. Literally translated it means, ‘First and foremost, wash your hands.’ Recited by students during the 12-hour-live Cleanathon for the NDTV Banega Swachh India Campaign, it highlights the importance of washing hands.

The school was awarded the state’s Swachh Vidyalaya Award for their initiatives and efforts to make their school clean and hygienic for children. The award, launched as a follow up to the Swachh Vidyalaya Initiative started in 2014 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, aims to bring about a positive behavioural change in society and is awarded to the schools that have done impeccable work in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash).

Writing: Exercise 6 (Writing a Report)

From 2019 onwards, Exercise 6 could also be a report-writing task.

You will be given a particular context and asked to write a report on it. You are expected to write 150-200 words, and the exercise is worth 16 marks.

Let’s look at a sample question:

Follow these steps to answer the question:

  • Read the question carefully and ensure that you know what it is asking for. It may be helpful to underline the important points in pencil.
  • Make a plan and spend not more than 5 minutes on it. It should give you a rough idea of the details you want to include in your report, what you want to write in your introduction, body and conclusion. Remember, the purpose of a report is to reflect on and evaluate something, so make sure you keep that in mind when drawing up your plan.
  • Come up with a title. It should be brief and relevant and will give you a good start.
  • Write a strong, but concise, introduction . This paragraph should include the most important details of the event that you are reporting on – the ‘ who ‘(your class), ‘ what ‘(a trip), ‘ when ‘(last week? last month?), ‘ where ‘(large recycling centre) , ‘ why (learn about recycling)’ and ‘ how ‘(if applicable).
  • You need to then organise your body according to what the question is asking for. For example, you are asked to write a report on what you did on the trip (write about three points. Example: spoke to employees, visited sorting unit, watched a plastic recycling process etc.) and what you learned from it as well (write about two points. Example: only 50% of materials brought in are recycled, recycling helps the environment). You could have one paragraph on the former and one on the latter. Be clear.
  • The ending paragraph should briefly conclude the report. In the sample question above, you are asked to write a suggestion for improvement , so this could be your conclusion. Write a couple of sentences outlining your views on how the trip went (example: very informative or too long) and one or two suggestions (example: hands-on-experience, watch a video etc.).

Other tips:

  • You can use the picture prompt as well as the written prompts, but you can score higher marks for your own ideas.
  • Keep the language reasonably formal and direct , but there’s no need to use jargon or big words.
  • Keep in mind that the exercise is to write a report. Be direct and straightforward in your approach. Don’t overthink your points and add unnecessary comments and opinions of your own.
  • Keep your points concise. There should be only 150-200 words, after all.

Time Management

For the core paper 1 , take about 20 minutes to finish this exercise, 5 minutes to plan, 10 minutes to write and 5 minutes to check your writing.

For the extended paper 2 , take 30 minutes for the whole exercise. Take 5 minutes to plan your report, by coming up with points to be included in the introduction, body and conclusion. Use 20 minutes for writing the report and the final 5 minutes to proofread and edit your report.

Report Writing on Flood

One of the most common topics that are included in the English language is report writing. Report writing is generally introduced in the syllabus of students who are in higher classes. Students can be asked to write reports about various topics, and one of such topics is floods.

Floods are quite common in low-lying areas and areas that are near water bodies. Floods mostly happen when rivers overflow due to heavy or incessant rain. Areas that get submerged in water don’t have adequate dams built to hold the flowing water. Almost every year, many areas and farming lands go under water. Hundreds of people get affected and either lose their livelihoods or homes during this situation.

So when you are writing a report about floods, you need to mention factors including the reasons that have led to the floods, the areas that have been flooded, the damage that has been caused by the floods, the measures taken to help with the damage, and the people affected.

The following flood reports will help you write the same even if you are writing them for the first time. So without wasting much time, go through the reports given below.

Report of Flood in West Bengal

The entire district of Bakura, West Bengal, faced heavy rainfall for hours this week. More than five villages were flooded and over five lakh people were affected. The flood was mainly caused due to the increased level of water in the Damodar. The areas drained by the river were affected badly as most of the land went under water. The agricultural lands and livestock were badly affected too. Though the authorities had moved around three lakh people to different flood shelters, many were still stuck. The NDRF and army personnel were deployed to handle the situation and ensure no lives were lost during the flood. The government had opened many helpline numbers to assist the people in distress. Various authorities were instructed to help people with clean water, proper food and medicines. Health inspectors were deployed to check the medical condition of the people in the shelter. The government had announced that people who were severely affected by the flood would be given monetary assistance. The Chief Minister had formed a committee that would look into the areas where people were severely affected and provide them with the necessary assistance they needed. The Irrigation and Waterways Minister was instructed by the Chief Minister to look into the situation and come up with a plan to prevent loss of life and property during floods in the future.

Report of Flood in Assam

On 15th July 2021, due to heavy rainfall, the Brahmaputra river flooded and, as a result, affected many areas. Almost 10 lakh people were affected due to the flooding of the Brahmaputra, and several houses in the village and agricultural lands went under water. The government released a statement saying 50 people in the low-lying areas had drowned due to the severe flooding around it. The government said that, in spite of their flood control efforts, more than ten villages were under water. They informed the press that this mainly happened due to continuous heavy rainfall for the past four days. The Chief Minister instructed the Irrigation and Waterways Minister to look into the situation and prepare a report on it. Many houses, even in the cities, were affected, and houses along the river had either gone underwater or had been severely damaged. The army and NDRF team had worked quite hard to get the people to a safe shelter. To ensure that people don’t get affected by waterborne diseases, the Chief Minister had asked a team of doctors to visit the shelter homes and provide the people with proper medical assistance. Various local authorities and NGOs worked together to provide clean drinking water, food and clothes to the affected people. The government announced monetary and medical assistance for the affected.

CBSE Board exams 2024: Last minute preparation tip

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 2024 exams which began on 15 February will be conducting English (Communicative) and English (Language and Literature) exam on Monday i.e. on 26 February. The two hour exam will begin at 10.30 am and continue till 1.30 pm. Ahead of the exams, there is tension among students around preparations and how to manage time.

ICSE Class 10 English Exam Analysis 2024:  The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) or ICSE Board Class 10 examination for the academic year 2023–24 has begun. ICSE successfully conducted the class 10 English language paper-1 exam on February 21, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

ICSE Class 10 Board Examination 2024: Highlights

Icse class 10 english language paper-1 pattern 2024.

  • Total number of questions was 5.
  • All questions were compulsory.
  • The intended marks for questions or parts of questions were indicated on the front of the question.   Students were advised to spend not more than 30 minutes on Question 1, 20 minutes on Question 2, 30 minutes on Question 3 and 50 minutes on Question 4.
  • The first question, for 20 marks, had composition writing of 300 - 350 words.
  • The second question, for 10 marks, had letter writing.
  • The third question had two sub-parts of notice and email writing, each part carried 5 marks.
  • The fourth question had an unseen passage with various sub-questions.
  • The fifth question was based on the grammar portions. 

ICSE Class 10 English Language Paper-1 Analysis 2024: Students Feedback

  • As per the students, the English language question paper difficulty level was easy to moderate. 
  • Everything was asked from the prescribed syllabus for ICSE Class 10 English. 
  • Students found the ICSE 10th English language paper lengthy but manageable. 
  • The language of the questions was direct in nature, which made it easy for the students to understand the demands of the questions.
