Library Jobs

Duties, Requirements, and Salaries

Library Technicians

Library assistants, public relations specialists, administrative services managers, computer support specialists.

Dawn Rosenberg McKay is a certified Career Development Facilitator.

Have you ever thought about working in a library? Maybe you have special memories of spending time in one as a child. If you want a career in this field because you love books, it is essential to note that you should also love technology—libraries are filled with the latest tech tools and you will have to feel comfortable using them. You should also enjoy being around people. Your library job, regardless of the career you choose, will involve interacting with patrons, but some involve less direct contact than others.

It takes many people to make a library run. There are those individuals who deal directly with the resources for which people come to libraries: librarians, library technicians, and library assistants. The job duties differ for these occupations, as do the education requirements and salaries. Then there are the people who work behind the scenes, but are nonetheless essential to the functioning of the facility. They are public relations specialists, office managers, computer support specialists, and janitors.

Librarians select print and non-print materials for public, school, university, law, medical, and corporate libraries. They make these resources accessible to users by organizing them and providing instruction in their use. Librarians also supervise other library workers and some become library directors.

VIENNA — More than 70,000 books from the library of the former Ohio Valley University are bound for new homes around the region and beyond.

OVU, a Church of Christ-affiliated school that operated in Wood County for more than 60 years, closed amid financial and academic struggles in 2021.

The West Virginia University at Parkersburg Foundation purchased its properties last year, with plans on transforming the north campus into the WVUP Incubator and Technology Center.

The center will focus on technological degree programs and provide incubator space for businesses. Those plans don’t include a library, since there’s already one on the main campus, said WVUP President Torie Jackson.

“A lot of the books are religious books, and we don’t intend to have a library on this campus,” she said.

Instead, the collection from the library on the ground floor of the former Stotts Administration Hall is being donated to area Churches of Christ and affiliated groups. That’s something of a full-circle journey since a number of the books were legacy gifts from the collections of ministers who passed away, said Dale Parsley, minister at the Dewey Avenue Church of Christ in St. Marys.

“This library is going to … benefit so many groups,” he said.

Parsley was helping oversee activity Tuesday as ministers and other volunteers were sorting and boxing up the books from the library shelves, as well as the OVU bookstore. Some were picking out books to take themselves, but most of the volumes were being loaded onto a semi trailer donated by R.O. Wetz Transportation in Marietta.

A campus minister from Marshall University was on hand to look through the materials Tuesday and see what he could bring back there. Some books will go to church camps. Others are bound for a school for preachers in Kenya, Parsley said.

Once they’ve been sorted, a community book giveaway is planned for March in cooperation with Wood County Christian School, Parsley said. Donations to the school will be accepted but there will be no charge for the books, he said.

Among those at the library Tuesday was Sonya Hescht, whose father, Cifton Inman, was one of the founders and an early fundraiser for the school. Hescht attended then-Ohio Valley College and later worked for four or five years as the librarian at the school.

“I’m glad somebody’s getting them (the books) that can use them,” she said.

The goal is to have the library emptied by Thursday, Parsley said.

Choral music at the school is being sent to a school in Tennessee, while band chairs and music stands will be donated to Williamstown High School.

A number of renovations are going on at the building, Jackson said. Clearing the library and removing the furniture – with usable items being donated to various groups – will allow for a complete assessment on asbestos removal for the building, she said. There are already plans to replace the floor tiles containing the material.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Warren County program has provided 50,000 books for county children under five years old over the last five years.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Warren County is celebrating the 50,000-book milestone.

Located at the Jefferson DeFrees Family Center, the program has provided 50,000 books for county children under five years old.

“Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Warren County was launched in July 2018 at which time 15 books were mailed,” Jennifer Madigan, childcare director at the Jefferson DeFrees Family Center, said. “The recent Storybook Breakfast event was a fundraiser to support the program.”

County Commissioners Dan Glotz and Ken Klakamp recently presented a “Citation of Excellence” to the center in recognition of the success of the program.

There’s a pop up book sale in the forecast.

library books jobs

Kendall Young Library will host its first Pop Up Book Sale Saturday, February 24, at the library, 1201 Willson Avenue, Webster City. The sale is from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is a new creative approach to book sales, according to Ann McLaughlin, a library employee. Instead of the usual three-day book sale in the spring, the library has plans for a series of pop-up book sales, beginning with the first one on February 24. The idea will be to have a sale every two months that can “Pop Up” anywhere in Webster City. McLaughlin said the pop up book sales will be on a reduced scale and will only last one day. However, she said the library will still hold its regular three-day Friends of the Kendall Young Library book sale in the fall. McLaughlin is pictured here with the mass quantity of books that will eventually be for sale.

The international Repair Café slogan is “Toss it? No way!” The Moscow Library wants to help our community put that idea into action — so we offer four free Repair Cafés a year. Community members can save money, learn new skills and keep as many things out of the landfill as possible by bringing items in need of repair to the 1912 Center Great Room. Volunteer experts will share their repair skills in such areas as clothing and textiles; book mending; small appliances; knife sharpening; jewelry; and gluing options. We make no guarantee that items will be fully repaired, and it’s understood that you bring items at your own risk. But hey, you can learn a repair skill, it’s free, and it’s a fun way to socialize with your community. Bonus: light refreshments are provided.

Partial funding for Repair Café is supplied by the Friends of the Moscow Library.

Virtual Repair Cafés

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, we were unable to do in person Repair Café so we did some digital tutorials with some of our awesome volunteers!

“Repair Cafés are free meeting places and they’re all about repairing things (together). In the place where a Repair Café is located, you’ll find tools and materials to help you make any repairs you need. On clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, appliances, toys, et cetera. You’ll also find expert volunteers, with repair skills in all kinds of fields.” -From Repair Café’s website.

'It's absurd': North Fort Myers teacher resigns after school removes in-class library

library books jobs

Over Mike Andoscia’s eight years as a social studies teacher at North Fort Myers High School, he’d grown his classroom library to more than 600 books.

When he came into school on Jan. 16, they were gone.

The next day, so was he.

Andoscia resigned after the school boxed up his library, placed the books in “administrative lockup” and told him to take them home, Andoscia said in an interview.

“[Principal Debbie Diggs] asked me why I just didn’t keep the books covered, and I said it’s absurd and it’s fascism and I’m just not going to participate in that,” he said.

Andoscia’s resignation is the latest flare-up over HB 1069 – a state law, signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis last year, that requires school districts to restrict books that are deemed age-inappropriate or describe “sexual conduct."

Proponents of the bill say the law is intended to protect parental rights, not broadly ban books. But in practice, districts across the state have pre-emptively removed thousands of books to avoid potential criminal liability.

The Lee County School District declined to comment for this story.

More: How do Collier and Lee schools decide which books to ban? Here's what we know

For years, Andoscia had allowed his high school students to check out books from his library without complaint. The collection consisted of history, social studies, philosophy and fiction, and he would typically lend out 20-30 books per school year, he said. – though that number had fallen in recent years.

But in May of last year, Lee County told teachers they would have to enter all materials in classroom libraries into a digital database so that media specialists could review them. Andoscia spent 12 hours scanning his collection into the system, he said.

“What we were told was that by the time school started in August, all of the books would have been vetted and we would know what books to put on our shelves and what not to put in our shelves,” Andoscia said.

But that didn’t happen. By the time of the school’s annual parent open house, all his books remained in administrative limbo. Administrators told him to cover up the books, so he hung red project paper over the shelves before parents arrived.

“It looked absolutely ridiculous,” Andoscia said. “I put a snarky sign up on my books that said these books have not yet been vetted by the state.”

The News-Press requested data last week on classroom library reviews from the Lee County School District. That request has not yet been answered.

Andoscia, who had been teaching for 30 years, was already thinking about retirement. He knew it would be a “long year,” he said, but his daughter was a senior and he resolved to stick it out until she graduated.

He was not, however, willing to censor the library for his students, who were primarily upperclassmen taking advanced classes in sociology, economics and philosophy.

“I did not want to communicate to the kids that this is OK,” Andoscia said. “That it’s perfectly reasonable to cover books up.”

So he took the project paper down before school started – a move that the administration tolerated until last month. Just one student checked out a book this year, he said – the George Orwell classic “Animal Farm.”

Andoscia said he asked why the vetting process was taking so long, and was told that the reviewers were backlogged and hoped to catch up by the end of the year.

But by January, less than 10 percent of his library had been reviewed, he said. A few books were rejected, including “As I Lay Dying” by William Faulkner and Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” But Andoscia said he appealed the rejections through the online system and they were then marked “approved pending review,” so he put them back on the shelves.

When he arrived in class on Jan. 16 to find his shelves empty it was the final straw, Andoscia said. The next day he drafted a resignation letter and handed it to Diggs while she was in a meeting.

Andoscia, who last year was named a teacher of distinction in the Foundation for Lee Public School's Golden Apple teaching awards, said that Diggs asked him not to resign in a phone call that afternoon. But his mind was made up.

To complicate matters, after Andoscia resigned he got a call from the district saying that he was under investigation. And in a letter sent that evening, Lee Schools Professional Standards Director Fernando Vazquez warned Andoscia that his resignation could have financial consequences.

“There is a possibility that you may not be entitled to your sick time/personal time if you resign in the midst of an investigation,” Vazquez wrote.

Andoscia said the district did not tell him what he was being investigated for.
