Adobe Creative Residency

Everyone has a story to tell., those stories deserve to be heard..

Through the Adobe Creativity Residency program, we’re giving creators of all backgrounds greater opportunities to share their stories and pursue their dreams. The Creative Residency supports creativity in the community in two ways: through museum collaborations and the Community Fund.

CREATIVE RESIDENTS

Adobe x Museums

Adobe and the Adobe Foundation are collaborating with four international museums. This collaboration provides greater community access to the arts and creative programming at each museum. Additionally, select museums amplify diverse voices by hosting Creative Residents.

  • Find a Residency

Artist residencies provide artists, scholars, educators and other creative professionals the time, space and resources to work, individually or collectively, on the research and development of their practice.

A person with their back facing the camera in a studio space with two large windows facing a body of water.

Artist residencies vary; some of the ways they differ include:

  • Location (rural, remote, urban, tribal lands)
  • Culture and climate
  • Accessibility
  • Program design
  • Living space
  • Access to specialized equipment
  • Fees (application costs and scholarships)
  • Length of stay
  • Other supports (alumni program, curator visits, documentation, teaching opportunities)

The first step in an artist’s residency experience is research. An artist must understand their needs, limitations and interests at this moment in their life and career in order to find programs that are well-aligned. Once an artist has a clear understanding of their needs within the context of a residency, including their preferred workspace, length of residency, location and more, the Artist Communities Alliance (ACA) Directory can serve as a useful research tool.

Using the Directory

Artists can use the Directory for as broad or as narrow a search as they wish. Users can filter their search based on discipline, available equipment, accessibility and more, but it is important to be deliberate about these searches. How does a restraint or interest translate into a search? ACA encourages artists to be clear, proactive and intentional in their research process. Below, you'll find different approaches to the research process and guidance for generating the best search results.  The Directory is a tool and platform to discover and celebrate the varied diversity, typology and context in which artist support programs exist. It is a site for artists, arts administrators and other creatives to find opportunities. The Directory includes Organizations , Residency Programs , Open Calls and Jobs .

Currently, ACA maintains a list of wheelchair accessible member programs here .

Artists should think about their technical needs and working-style when choosing a program. Some residencies provide facilities, equipment and technical assistance that support specific art forms (for example, metal, wood and printmaking workspaces; dance floors and theater space; recording studios; kilns, darkrooms and digital media labs) while others offer raw space. Artists should consider what their practice requires, and what stage of their work will be best suited for a residency.

Search Example: A search with the tag word “Dance” may yield hundreds of programs open to dancers, but this does not mean all these programs have a dedicated dance studio. A filtered search for equipment may yield a more relevant list of residencies.

When choosing a residency program, some artists may seek a private space to focus on a project or practice a certain skill. Others may want to learn a specific technique by participating in workshops or working with particular artists, curators or scholars. Some artists, who hope to conduct research, may seek residencies within a particular institution or in a particular location. Consider the opportunities for education when choosing a residency.

Search Example: An artist who hopes to incorporate research into their practice may select “Residency program within a school, college or university” under Residency Structure to find a residency where they will have access to archives and other resources. They may also select “Embedded in a national park or land trust” if their research is more based in the natural environment.

Collaboration

Many forms of collaboration exist within residency programs. If an artist’s work incorporates the people and places around them, they may want a program with a connection to the local community. Some artists may be less interested in collaborating with the local community and more focused on building networks within the residency. Consider how many other artists will be in residence and what communal structures the program provides. Are there shared meals, communal spaces or opportunities for group projects?

Search Example: A writer may want to engage with the local community for a project they’re working on. However, when they return to the residency site, they seek solitude to work on their writing. They might select “Community-engaged” under Residency Program Type and 1-5 under “Average Number of Artists in Residence at a Time.”

Many artists seek a change in environment or an opportunity to take time away from the everyday to focus on their practice when deciding to participate in an artist residency. An artist should consider: How much time can I take? How much time do I need? Do I need a long stretch of time to work on a novel, start a new direction in my work or explore different techniques? Or do I need a short residency to finish editing, jumpstart some ideas, move to the next phase of a project?

Search Example: An artist who is parenting may only be able to participate in a week-long residency. They want to be fully focused on their work and away from distractions during this week. They would search for week-long residencies under Residency Length and may search “Retreat” under Residency Program Type and “All meals” under Meals Provided so they don’t have to worry about cooking during their stay.

Decorative Colored rule

We encourage artists to be clear, proactive and intentional in their research process. Sign up for ACA’s Residency Opportunities Newsletter, visit the Resources for Artists page, and search through the Directory to advance your research, inquiry and application process.

The Resident Artist Program at Creative Alliance is a collaborative residency that fosters creativity, production, inspiration, community, and conversation. For over 12 years, the resident artist program at The Patterson has supported artists from Baltimore and the nation. Creative Alliance supports artists with reduced-rent live/work studios, professional development, studio visits with leaders in the art world, trips to art museums around Baltimore and the DMV, connections to other art production services, and a sense of community that extends beyond the artists’ time at Creative Alliance. During their residency, artists actively work on their art practice, showcase their work at Creative Alliance, and participate in resident artist gatherings.

The Program accommodates eight resident artists, one in each of the studios, for terms of one to three years. It is intended for emerging artists as well as mid-career artists whose goal is to reinvigorate their work in an intensive creative atmosphere. Artists are encouraged (but not required) to use the studios as their primary residence.

The resident artist supports the Creative Alliance by paying subsidized rent. Resident artists are expected to actively work on their art practice, showcase their work at Creative Alliance, and participate in resident artist gatherings. In turn, the Creative Alliance supports the artist with professional development, studio visits with leaders in the art world, trips to immerse in art mediums around Baltimore and the DMV, connections to other art production services, and a sense of community that extends beyond the artists’ time at Creative Alliance. Applications for the resident artist program can be found here and are evaluated every Spring.

creative residency programs

By Shira Wolfe

“Black Rock stands as the direct answer to my desire to have an uncontested relationship with Africa, the filling in of a large void that I share with many African Americans. With this project I wanted to explore my own personal relationship with Africa while inviting artists to do the same and to galvanize the growing artistic and creative energies that exist in Africa in an increasing measure with the addition of diverse, international, creative possibility.” Kehinde Wiley

In this challenging and turbulent year, art has repeatedly proven to be a lifeline for people, something to connect us, offer reflection, insight and healing. People looked to artists for advice on how to find a creative outlet for their emotions and fears, and a lot of new projects and artists were born. And although travel is still greatly impeded, advised against, or even restricted in most parts of the world, we take a look at an eclectic mix of artist residencies that are each finding ways to welcome artists. From short-lived, conceptual walking residencies to well-established residencies in the homes of famous artists, these spaces are made for creation, inspiration and production.

Black Rock

1. Black Rock

Black Rock is a multidisciplinary artist-in-residence program in Dakar, Senegal that was founded in 2019 by artist Kehinde Wiley . The residency program stems from Wiley’s wish to engage with Africa in a more personal way. He first visited Dakar in 1997, during his first visit to Africa, and fell in love with the Senegalese language, culture and tradition. Years later, Wiley felt a strong desire to create a space for creative work in West Africa, in order to work outside of the western context and create work within the context of his own lineage. For the residency program, Wiley invites international artists to live and work in Dakar for a period of 1-3 months. Dakar is situated on the westernmost point of continental Africa and is surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean. The residency is located 20 minutes northwest of the city centre, right by the ocean. Black Rock takes its name from the shoreline, which is covered in black, volcanic rocks.

De Ateliers residency

2. De Ateliers

De Ateliers is an artist residency in the centre of Amsterdam, focused on talented artists at the start of their professional careers. The residency offers 20 international and Dutch artists at a time a two-year working period at De Ateliers, including their own studio and weekly individual studio visits by tutor artists. In addition to the studio visits, De Ateliers offers seminars and field trips to exhibitions and other relevant places. Every artist participating at De Ateliers receives a yearly stipend of €13.800 to cover living expenses, as well as a yearly production grant of €2000. At the end of the two-year residency, De Ateliers organises an exhibition of all the resident artists. The program supports artists in the development of their artistic practice as well as in creating a solid network.

artist residencies caribic

3. Caribic Residency

Caribic Residency is one of those elusive artist residency programs that keep you guessing, but its highly original take on the artist residency makes it worth exploring. Not much information is shared other than the fact that Caribic Residency is a “two-day emergent artist residency model based on immediacy and encounter in various locations.” The artist is taken outside, and the host and artist walk together with a goal of around 50 km, staying overnight along the way. The idea is to meet in a city of choice and wander without a specific aim for two days, creating space for conversations, activating the physical body, and getting lost in thought. The project has taken place in cities including Berlin, Lisbon, Athens, London, Paris, Las Vegas, Rome, Porto, Cyprus and New York. For enquiries, contact Caribic Residency here .

Dora Maar artist residencies

4. Dora Maar House

The Dora Maar House is an established artist residency program located in the house that Dora Maar bought in 1944 following her breakup with Picasso. The 19th-century townhouse is situated in Ménerbes, Provence in France. Maar spent each summer in solitude in Ménerbes. When she passed away in 1997, an American arts patron, Nancy Brown Negley, bought and renovated the house and created an artist residency for artists, writers and academics. Since 2007, the Brown Foundation Fellowship Program offers artist residencies of 1-2 months for mid-career artists, writers or academics. This is not a residency for people at the start of their career; the residents are already established professionals in their field of expertise. Resident artists are provided with a stipend of $50 a day and a travel allowance to travel to and from the house.

artist residencies

5. Noldor Artist Residency

Noldor Artist Residency opened in November 2020 in Accra, Ghana, is the first independent artist residency in Ghana. Noldor was founded by contemporary African art specialist, social entrepreneur and philanthropist Joseph Awuah-Darko. The residency program offers a space for contemporary African artists to extend and deepen their practice, and to exchange with others in a growing artistic commune. In addition to its annual four-week artist residency which ends with an exhibition, there will be a year-long program for senior and junior fellows in Noldor’s newly renovated 700-square-meter warehouse spaces, formerly a pharmaceutical factory. The aim is to encourage artistic experimentation in a continually expanding creative community existing of both emerging and mid-career artists with artist studios, cultural centres and galleries.

“I have thanked my instinct every day I am here and when I can’t be, Captiva is the foundation of my life and my work; it is my source and reserve of my energies.” Robert Rauschenberg

Schloss Solitude

6. Schloss Solitude

Akademie Schloss Solitude is an international artist residency program in Stuttgart, Germany, in what was once built as the summer residence and hunting lodge of Charles Eugene, the Duke of Wuerttemberg. Schloss Solitude has supported around 1400 young artists from over 120 countries since it was opened in 1990. The program is open to artists, scholars and scientists working across disciplines, and enables fellows to devote themselves fully to their research projects free of material constraints or daily pressures and deadlines. The fellowship includes a free living/working studio, a monthly fellowship grant of €1200 and travel expenses. The length of fellowships ranges from three to twelve months.

Rauschenberg Residency

7. Rauschenberg Residency

The Rauschenberg Residency is an artist residency located on Robert Rauschenberg’s former property on Captiva Island, Florida. He lived and worked here for almost 40 years after leaving New York City. The property includes Rauschenberg’s 740 square metre studio, a collection of historic homes and studio spaces. Captiva Island meant everything to Rauschenberg and had a great influence on his art. In a 1970 letter, he described his experience of Captiva: “I have thanked my instinct every day I am here and when I can’t be, Captiva is the foundation of my life and my work; it is my source and reserve of my energies.” In 2012-13, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation first launched the residency program. Every year, there are eight five-week residencies artists and scholars from a wide range of disciplines. Inspired by Rauschenberg’s early years at Black Mountain College, the residency similarly seeks to foster a rich artistic community. Currently, the selection process for the Rauschenberg Residency is by invitation only.

ARCUS artist-in-residence

8. ARCUS Artist-in-Residence Ibaraki

Based in the city of Moriya in the Japanese Ibaraki prefecture, the ARCUS Artist-in-Residence Program supports promising international artists working across various disciplines, who are interested in interacting with the Ibaraki area through their art. The residency program has been up and running since 1994, offering artists free accommodation and studios during their stay. Travel costs to and from the residency are also covered, and the artists receive a stipend of 180.000 yen (approximately €1383) for living expenses and 450.000 yen (approximately €3458) for any expenses related to the artistic activities. The residency period lasts 100 days and ends with a presentation of the residency activities in the shape of an exhibition, a performance, or a publication.

Tabakalera

9. Tabakalera

Located in a former cigarette factory in the coastal town of San Sebastian in the Basque country, Tabakalera was opened in 2015 as an International Centre for Contemporary Culture. The aim is to help develop the artistic and critical capacity of Basque society through creative activities. Tabakalera offers residencies for artists and curators, which currently last between four and eight weeks. The residency program includes a monthly stipend of €1000 to cover living expenses, as well as travel expenses, accommodation and a studio space, and an additional €2500 to cover production-related expenses. The current call for project proposals is open to national and international artists from the Basque Autonomous Community.

Rabbit Island residency

10. Rabbit Island

We conclude our list of artist residencies with the story of Rabbit Island, an island on Lake Superior in Michigan. In 2010 Rob Gorski, a New York City emergency room physician, stumbled upon the island’s for-sale ad while browsing on Craigslist. It didn’t take him long to make up his mind and he purchased the island with the idea to create a space for artists to come together and rest, reflect, create and work. The island has never been logged, mined, or cleared for homes, and therefore has a rich ecosystem. Gorski negotiated a conservation easement in order to maintain the island’s ecosystem and then raised money through a Kickstarter campaign to create the Rabbit Island Residency. Artists can come live and work on the island for a period of two to four weeks. They engage directly with the landscape and respond to notions of conservation, ecology, and sustainability through their various practices. Residents are asked to avoid creating paths by changing their walking routes in the forest and to adapt to the ways of the island. This means no electricity or plumbing, basic accommodation, an open-air toilet, food that is brought by boat, foraged or fished, and water filtered from the lake. The island thus remains a pure and healthy haven for whoever is lucky enough to visit.

Introducing the 2019-2020 Adobe Creative Residents

creative residency programs

One of my favorite programs is the Adobe Creative Residency , which offers creative professionals starting their career the ability to experiment and pursue a creative project for an entire year. The program provides residents access to mentors, experts, Adobe’s latest creative technologies, as well as the opportunity to foster creativity within their own communities.

I am delighted we are extending the program to Japan to support the emergence of experiential design and their long-established illustration discipline. Our two Japanese residents will push the boundaries in design by incorporating augmented reality into their workstreams.

This year’s residents make up our largest and most diverse class yet, with projects in Experience Design, Digital Drawing and Painting, Videography, and Photography.

I am excited to share the work and passion of the 2019-2020 residents with you.

Within the field of Experience Design we have three residents from around the world whose diverse work showcases the depth and breadth of the XD field.

Juan José Egusquiza ’s Impossible Stories project is a series of images from daily life that are manipulated to create a fictional reality. His residency is enabling him to share his creative process, get feedback from the community, and expand his storytelling tools and techniques. In a few years, he’d like to be a creative director whose focus is on making ideas visually tangible. Juan José is working out of Brooklyn, NY.

Getting your creative career launched is an overwhelming task. We are excited to highlight the steps our residents take to turn their creative passions into a full-fledged profession this year and hope others will consider following in their footsteps. As always, I am looking forward to being blown away by what our residents create this year-and in particular I am excited about the work some of them are doing for social good to impact our environment and society.

Call for Applications: Martin House Creative Residency Program

Call for Applications: Martin House Creative Residency Program - Image 1 of 1

  • Published on January 20, 2023

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS | MARTIN HOUSE CREATIVE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House (Buffalo, New York) is pleased to announce a call for applications to its newly established Creative Residency Program. The residency provides individuals from multiple disciplines a thought-provoking environment in which to produce new works of the imagination inspired by one of the great examples of 20th century architecture.

Applications to the 2023 inaugural season will open on February 1 and close on March 31. They will be accepted in two distinct categories. The Artist Program supports the development and presentation of creative works. The Researcher Program provides opportunities to conduct research that will lead to published texts or projects in various fields, specifically as they relate to Frank Lloyd Wright and the Martin House. Creative makers who are selected to participate will generally spend 2-4 weeks onsite either consecutively or incrementally within the specified residency term: June 1-October 23, 2023. Residents are also expected to deliver a free public program, performance, exhibition, or other creative presentation in order to share their Martin House-inspired work with the larger public.

Residents will receive a stipend of $5,000. Travel expenses of up to $1,000 will also be provided to residents who are from outside the Buffalo-Niagara region.

The Creative Residency Program is an opportunity for the Martin House to respond to and engage with our community. We anticipate that it will lead to more robust interpretations of Frank Lloyd Wright, the Martin House, and the people who once lived and worked here so as to expand the dialogue as to what great architecture is and why it matters.

Further information and application materials are available here: https://martinhouse.org/visit/creative-residency-program/

Why Hotels Are Starting Artists-in-residence Programs

As more hotels make an effort to engage with their communities, some are offering space and funding to foster local artists.

A man is suspended by a harness from a towering tree in the cloud forest of Costa Rica . He twists and contorts his body, moving through the leaves and branches — a new way of interacting with this rich ecosystem.

It’s part of a multimedia piece choreographed by the Costa Rican art collective Wimblu — the culmination of a two-week residency at Hotel Belmar , a sustainable 26-room retreat in the mountains outside Monteverde. Wimblu’s members connected with the dancer, a local artist named Mario Rivera Camacho, during their time on property. “Hotel Belmar creates this atmosphere that allows you to slow down,” Wimblu cofounder Alessandra Baltodano Estrada later reflected. “This opens up the mind to create.”

Around the world, hotels are getting into the art game — not only opening galleries and displaying one-of-a-kind works but also offering a gathering place for creative collaboration. At Hotel Belmar — whose manager, Pedro Belmar, previously worked at MoMA in New York City — those selected for residency are provided room, board, and sometimes a stipend, depending on need.

Other hotels offer their own twists on the residency experience. Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort provides gallery space to artist-in-residence Welzie, who in turn offers classes for guests. There have been more than 30 participants in an ongoing program at Park Hotel Tokyo that invites creatives to stay at the hotel and personalize a room of their choosing — with some painting directly on the walls.

Tim Reynolds, founder of Àni Private Resorts , became a dedicated painter after a near-fatal accident. His collection of staffed exclusive-use retreats (in Anguilla, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the Dominican Republic) has a sister nonprofit, Àni Art Academies , where prospective students can apply for multiyear fine-art courses held near each resort — all funded by company proceeds.

Back in Costa Rica, Belmar notes that projects like this are enriching not only for artists but also staff, community, and guests. “When you travel, it’s easy to miss the cultural context,” he says. “Maybe this is an introduction.”

A version of this story first appeared in the April 2023 issue of Travel + Leisure under the headline "A Fresh Canvas."
