The Elephant Whisperer

Written by : Lawrence Anthony and Graham Spence

Published : November 10th, 2009

Pages : 384

Elephants are known for their intelligence and social connectivity, but they are also some of the most endangered animals on earth. In this book, Lawrence Anthony tells how he came to be one of the very few people in the world to have a deep understanding and relationship with elephants. When he was asked to take over a colony of them, he wanted to refuse but realized that if he didn’t, they would be poached or killed.

As Anthony discovered, they are also capable of great compassion. In his time living with them, he formed an unbreakable bond with a herd of elephants he refers to as his family. This is a fantastic story about an often misunderstood and feared animal. It will inspire readers to rethink their assumptions about these majestic creatures.

In the Shadow of Man

Written by : Jane Goodall and Richard Wrangham

At first, it seemed destined to fail as there was almost no contact between the chimps and her team. Goodall's observations helped redefine the relationship between humans and chimpanzees, and they demonstrated that chimpanzees are capable of tool use and complex social interactions. The book also includes Goodall's thoughts on human evolution and morality.

3. Babylon’s Ark: The Incredible Wartime Rescue of the Bagdad Zoo

Babylon’s Ark

Published : March 6th, 2007

The second book by these two authors is a joy and a wonderful experience. Babylon's Ark chronicles the incredible wartime rescue of the Baghdad Zoo. When U.S. troops invaded Baghdad in 2003, they found a city in chaos—and a zoo that had been all but destroyed. The animals were malnourished and dying, and many of the cages had been looted or bombed.

It is incredible what he and his teammates had to do to keep them, including bartering for food on the stress with merchants. But a team of local Iraqi zoo employees and civilians, American soldiers, and others came together to save the animals, setting up makeshift shelters and food programs to care for them. These heroes saved hundreds of animals from certain death in the face of daunting obstacles. Babylon's Ark is an inspiring story of courage and compassion in the face of war.

Are animals as intelligent as we once believed? Or are they far cleverer than we ever imagined? In his book, Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? Frans de Waal examines the latest research on animal cognition and offers a surprising assessment of our furry and feathered friends. Drawing on his groundbreaking work with chimpanzees, bats, sheep, and other species, de Waal provides compelling evidence that many animals are capable of thought and reflection, complex communication, tool use, and even self-awareness.

So, what does this mean for how we view animals—and ourselves? De Waal argues that it's time to rethink our understanding of intelligence and consider the possibility that animals may be more intelligent than we think. Animal Anatomy Books

Animal anatomy or also known as veterinary anatomy is the science whose objective is to make a description of the shape and structure of the organisms that make up an animal species.

The anatomical exploration of animals is initially based on the observation of the structures that compose it and that classify it as a living being. The veterinary anatomical investigation of the different animal species to know their differences and similarities is known as Comparative anatomy.

The purpose of carrying out these studies arises from human curiosity to investigate the progressive aspects of the different species. At present, research and practices continue to be carried out in relation to the subject, having a representation of the organs and everything that make up the various animal species.

2) Animal Husbandry Books

Animal Husbandry Books

Animal husbandry  is an economic activity of very ancient origin that consists of raising animals for their use. Depending on the livestock species, various derived products are obtained, such as meat, milk, eggs, hides, wool and honey, among others.

The most important livestock species worldwide are cattle, sheep and pigs. However, in some regions of the world, other types of livestock are more important, such as goats and horses, as well as cuniculture, poultry and  beekeeping .

Animal husbandry is closely related to  agriculture , since on a farm the two can be interrelated. In these cases, the livestock provide the manure, which is used as fertilizer, and the crops provide the feed for the animals.

3) Cats Books

Cats Books

Cats  are amazing animals. They have been the only members of the felidae family that have been willing to coexist with humans, thus building a unique relationship among the animal kingdom. We think we have domesticated them, but in reality the friendship that unites us is maintained because we accept their rules in exchange for the great affection they give us.

Cats belong to the Felis catus species, that is, they are felids, just like lions, tigers, cougars, among others. The body of these animals is made by and for hunting, so they are carnivores, which means that in order to survive they must hunt their prey and feed on them.

Already the ancient Egyptians had a penchant for cats, as they were the ones who first domesticated them. It was a revered animal and was part of the daily life of the ruling class and, in fact, there were funerals in its honor.

The  dog  is a mammal and quadruped animal that was domesticated about 10,000 years ago and currently lives with humans as a pet. Its scientific name is Canis lupus familiaris.

The domestic dog is a subspecies of the wolf, it is believed that it gradually came to live in places where there were human settlements, this made it get used to the presence of humans and paved the way for its domestication; at first it was used as a hunting assistant or to carry out defense and guarding tasks, later it would be used for herding functions; nowadays it is highly valued as a companion animal or pet.

Endangered Animals Books

According to data from the  International Union for Conservation of Nature , the international organization with the greatest authority on the problem, approximately 5,200 species of animals are currently in  danger of extinction . Furthermore, in a breakdown by class, 11% of birds, 20% of reptiles, 34% of fish and 25% of amphibians and mammals are in danger of extinction.

There are many reasons why a species may be on the verge of extinction. The reasons may be highly specific to each species, but in general terms, among the greatest threats are the destruction and fragmentation of their habitats; climate change; illegal hunting and trafficking; and the introduction of exotic species.

Preventing a species from disappearing involves the implementation of a large number of resources and concrete actions. Some of these would be to avoid the fragmentation of their habitats, for example deforestation; to prosecute and severely

6) Horses Books

Horses Books

A  horse  is a mammal animal that is part of the equidae family. It is a perissodactyl: an ungulate being (it uses the end of its toes for support and walking) whose limbs have an odd number of toes ending in hooves and whose central toe is more developed than the rest.

Their diet is based on plants such as grass or hay, but some fruits and vegetables such as apples and carrots can also be included in their food group.

Horses can be domesticated, those that humans have been able to tame for different purposes are very useful in animal husbandry or for sport, as well as in psychological and physical rehabilitation therapies (equine therapy) and for transportation in certain rural contexts. At the same time, there are horses that live in the wild.

7) Sharks Books

Sharks Books

Sharks are a group of cartilaginous fishes (that is, without a bony skeleton) scientifically known as selachii (i.e., belonging to the superorder Selachimorpha). It is one of the most popular and feared marine animals by mankind, due to its role as a ferocious marine predator.

Some three hundred and seventy-five species of sharks belonging to eight different orders have been recognized, with specimens that can exceed ten meters in length. The largest species is called the whale shark. Sharks are ovoviviparous, which means that the young are born inside the female, but develop inside an egg.

Their presence on our planet has been documented for more than 450 million years, although it is true that they are not the same sharks that haunt the oceans today, but an evolved version.

Isabelle Popp

Isabelle Popp has written all sorts of things, ranging from astrophysics research articles and math tests to crossword puzzles and poetry. These days she's writing romance. When she's not reading or writing, she's probably knitting or scouring used book stores for vintage gothic romance paperbacks. Originally from New York, she's as surprised as anyone that she lives in Bloomington, Indiana.

View All posts by Isabelle Popp

If you adorned your childhood bedroom with posters of horse breeds or bird species (guilty on both counts right here), you’ve come to the right place. A childhood spent in the thrall of books about adventurous and loyal dogs has led me here. The tattered paperbacks of James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small series I kept in my desk in middle school gave me away. It’s no secret that I love animals, and I love stories about animals.

We can’t look away from the fact that our planet, and by extension the animals on it, are under threat. So many of the nonfiction books about animals catalog the atrocities humans have been committing against them: stealing habitat, changing the climate, hunting them to extinction. These books are important, but so are the feel-good nonfiction books about animals. These are the kinds of stories that remind us of the astonishing bonds between humans and animals. They help us remember what we need to be fighting for. And they open our eyes to the amazing and diverse ways life exists on this spectacular planet. It delights me to share this list with you, full of wondrous and touching stories about the animal world.

cover of horse crazy

Horse Crazy: The Story of a Woman and a World in Love with an Animal by Sarah Maslin Nir

As a former horse girl myself, I have to include a book that delves into the magical relationships between humans and their trusty steeds. If you’re not familiar with Sarah Maslin Nir by name, you may know her other work, namely the Pulitzer Prize–winning series in The New York Times about the exploitative and dangerous world of nail salons . Here, she turns her attention to horses, blending her own memoir into the compelling stories of a wide array of horse people like (and unlike) herself.

cover of On Animals by Susan Orlean

On Animals by Susan Orlean

When Susan Orlean turns her attention on something, the results are reliably luminous. If you’re a podcast fan, let me recommend dipping into the archives of her Crybabies podcast . It might be the only podcast dedicated to crying? This collection of stories about all sorts of animals will delight and enchant you. If you want a taste, check out her essay from On Animals about oxen, “ Carbonaro and Primavera ,” previously published in The Atlantic .

cover of bird brother

Bird Brother: A Falconer’s Journey and the Healing Power of Wildlife by Rodney Stotts

An especially touching detail in this memoir of one of the few Black master falconers in the U.S. is that visits to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo sparked his initial interest in raptors. Giving kids free access to experiences that ignite their imagination and promote dreaming is vital! Rodney Stotts had to overcome tremendous hardship to make it in his career. It’s amazing and inspiring to read about someone with such commitment to honoring the wild dreams of his childhood.

cover of the social lives of animals

The Social Lives of Animals by Ashley Ward

If you  were a kid who pored over books stuffed with facts about animals — where are my fellow Zoobooks magazine fans? — here is a book you will love. Biologist Ashley Ward spanned the globe looking for the myriad ways animals form societies. He covers termites, marine mammals, and everything in between. The book is packed with humor and insightful stories. You’ll likely come out of it with a new outlook on how you yourself are an animal, too.

world of wonders book cover

World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil and Fumi Nakamura

When poets write prose, you have to read it! That’s my rule. This book establishes the kinship Aimee Nezhukumatathil feels with all manner of creatures, from axolotls to flamingoes to vampire squid. Plants get their turn too, like the magnificent corpse flower. All are described with warmth and love, paired with reflections about how human foibles are mirrored in the natural world. And don’t miss the gorgeous illustrations from Fumi Nakamura.

cover of funny farm

Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals by Laurie Zaleski

Plenty of us dream about establishing a sanctuary for animal friends who’ve had a rough go at life. But Laurie Zaleski followed through on that dream. It was originally her mother’s dream, in fact, that Laurie eventually realized. Laurie’s story is heartwrenching at first, laden with the abuse and abandonment no person or animal deserves. But the book is proof of resilience, and the value of forging your own best life. It’s also a reminder that relationships with animals can truly help us through tough times.

cover of crossing the line

Crossing the Line: A Fearless Team of Brothers and the Sport That Changed Their Lives Forever by Kareem Rosser

Polo is a sport that’s tough for most people to wrap their head around. Having watched a handful of matches — look, I went to a college with a polo team and I already told you about that horse poster in my childhood bedroom — I can tell you it’s basically soccer on horseback. Although it’s a sport people associate with wealth and aristocracy and above all, whiteness, that’s not all it is. This story of a champion all-Black polo team that grew out of Philadelphia’s The Work to Ride stables proves that. A gifted storyteller, Kareem Rosser infuses his unflinching look at his tough upbringing in Philly with his true love of horses.

cover of eloquence of the sardine

Eloquence of the Sardine: Extraordinary Encounters Beneath the Sea by Bill François

I’ve always been captivated by life under water, and Bill François shares my fascination. With a focus on fish and other marine life, he blends memoir, travel writing, natural history, and even some anthropology into his lyrical and touching anecdotes. The threat humans pose to animal life, especially ocean life, can’t be ignored in nonfiction books about animals. Still, the attention and care the author brings to such creatures as the humble sardine will undeniably charm you.

cover of the chicken chronicles

The Chicken Chronicles: Sitting with the Angels Who Have Returned with My Memories: Glorious, Rufus, Gertrude Stein, Splendor, Hortensia, Agnes of God, The Gladyses, & Babe: A Memoir by Alice Walker

Alice Walker is certainly best known for her classic The Color Purple . However, she also wrote a memoir about keeping chickens! Anyone interested in having a little flock of their own will appreciate her musings. Her dedication to her “girls,” as she calls them, is evident. Spending time in the company of animals can help you truly see them, and also see yourself. This book is an account of that process.

I feel good just telling you about these books. Imagine how good you’ll feel reading them! And it doesn’t stop at nonfiction books about animals. water for elephants

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

I read this book long before we started the blog and I still recommend this animal book for adults to everyone as a must-read.

It is the middle of the Great Depression and Jacob finds himself orphaned just shy of earning his Veterinary degree. He finds himself a job with a circus caring for a menagerie.

Here he meets Marlena, the beautiful star of the show, and an untrainable elephant named Rosie. I loved everything about this book from the romance and tension to the beauty of the animals and their relationship with the people around them.

This h istorical fiction romance was one of the first books we thought of for a list of the best romance novels of all time. It is no surprise that this one also found its way to my list of all-time favorite books.

life of pi

Life of Pi by Yann Martel

When a boat sinks in the Pacific, the only survivors are a 16-year-old boy named Pi, an orangutan, a hyena, a Bengal tiger, and a zebra. And while this book was written less than 20 years ago, it is already a modern classic.

This is not a sailing novel that once read can be forgotten. I know that some people look at the story as an extended metaphor in which each animal represents a person but personally, I like the book exactly the way it was written, one of the best magical realism books I have read.

There is magic in the pages of this book in all meanings of the word. First, read this book, then, rethink everything. This is a perfect example of a thought-provoking book because no two people view it the same way. If you are looking for animal fiction books, this one is a must.

Lily and the Octopus

Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley

This is one of the animal novels that is an absolute must-read, from the brilliant and hilarious Steven Rowley. Ted is a single gay writer whose beloved dachshund, Lily, has cancer.

Ted will do anything to save his best friend and companion in this wonderful adventure that deals with loss and love in a way only Rowley can deliver.

Horse

Horse: A Novel by Geraldine Brooks

This animal book for adults was recommended to me a dozen times over the last year and I am so glad that I finally read this amazing, sweeping story that spans from 1850 through 2019.

An enslaved groomsman in Kentucky in 1850 has a way with horses and a deep connection with one beautiful horse. A gallery owner in the 1950s has an obsession with a painting of a horse. In 2019 a scientist working for the Smithsonian and an art historian are seeking answers.

All of these stories are connected with one amazing horse! I loved how this story came together and the fact that it was based on a real horse. But there is so much more to this story that examines race and slavery as well. The description does not do justice to this amazing book.

If you are looking for animal fiction books for the 2024 reading challenge, this is my #1 pick.

Animal Books for Adults with an Animal Narrator

Remarkably Bright Creatures and more family drama books

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

May 2022 read with jenna book club pick.

I haven’t read a novel with as much heart as this one in quite some time. Elderly, recently widowed Tova loves her job cleaning the aquarium in town in the quiet of the night, especially because of her fondness for Marcellus, the octopus. She finds solace in the aquarium as it makes her feel closer to her son, Erik – a marine life lover – who disappeared on a boat when he was 18.

But when she hurts herself and is unable to return to work at full capacity, she grows close with her replacement, Cameron, a young man who newly arrived in town looking for his birth mother.

Meanwhile, Marcellus knows what happened to Erik and he wants to help Tova find the closure she needs. His narration is interspersed with Tova and Cameron’s for a story that is compelling, heartwarming, and utterly unique.

I will be shoving this book into the hands of everyone who asks for a book recommendation because it’s my favorite book of 2022 and my pick as one of the best audiobooks of 2022.

And if you are looking for more family drama books like this, check out the Ultimate List of Feel-Good Books . This contemporary fiction book is a 5-star read and a book club book everyone will love.

Lessons in Chemistry and more goodreads choice awards 2022 books

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

April 2022 gma book club pick.

I don’t even know where to begin with this unique contemporary fiction story. Elizabeth Zott is a chemist in the 50s when women were expected to know their place in society — their place being the kitchen and the home.

Elizabeth struggles to be taken seriously in her field and as a single mother, in this amazing book. So when an offer to host a cooking show for women is put in her path, she reluctantly takes it.

She uses her no-nonsense attitude and chemistry principles to teach the women in America to not only cook but to follow their dreams outside of the home.

We love the fact that part of this quirky wonderful book is narrated by 6:30 (the dog). If you have not read this amazing book for book clubs and you are looking for some animal fiction books to add to your list, this one is a no-brainer.

Naamah by Sarah Blake

This is one of the most imaginative stories I’ve ever read. A retelling of the story of Noah’s ark from the perspective of his wife Naamah. The writing was poetic and almost psychedelic in quality.

Naamah is questioning her faith, her choices, and what it means to be a woman. The dreams, hallucinations, and visits to the future were used in novel ways during the Ark’s journey. This story had me rethinking the classic biblical tale. This is a pick on our LGBTQ books that is unlike any other.

art of racing in the rain

Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

Oh, this book. This pick from animal novels is a wonderful, heartbreaking, and uplifting story of love, loss, and family told as only a dog could.

This animal book for adults gives insights into human behavior as a dog would see it and is beautiful and humbling. After all, a dog is our best friend for a short time in our lives but we are their best friends for their entire lives.

A Dogs Purpose

A Dog’s Purpose: A Novel for Humans by W. Bruce Cameron

I read this book and it simultaneously broke my heart and confirmed everything that I ever hoped- that my beloved pets would come back to me over and over again throughout my life.

If you are an animal lover and you love dogs in particular, this pick from animal books for adults is heartwarming and poignant at the same time.

Classic Animal Books for Adults

moby dick

Moby Dick by Herman Melville

Oh, big white whale, how I despised you. I could not stand this boat book! My senior English professor is obsessed with it. We would get into debates CONSTANTLY, which actually made learning about it enjoyable and memorable.

But lordy, call me bored with this tale. (See what I did there?) Whaling, oil-making, and vulgar fishermen are not for me. So why is it on the list? Because lots of people ADORE this story. It’s not for me, but it might be for you! This is the quintessential animal book for adults.

Animal Farm

Animal Farm by George Orwell

Animal Farm” tells the tale of a group of farm animals who kick out their human owner and try to run the place themselves. However, things go a bit haywire when the pigs, who are all about that brainpower, end up taking charge and becoming even more power-hungry than the humans they booted out.

This is a satire about the need for power and the old adage that power begets power. In this pick from animal novels, there are a lot more oinks.

watership down

Watership Down by Richard Adams

In this classic animal book for adults rabbits are forced to find a new home when their warren is destroyed. Led by Hazel and Fiver, they must face vicious rabbits and human threats.

When I read this as a child, I thought it was so cute. Now that I have read it again as an adult, this book is so much more.

NonFiction Animal Books

Soul of an Octopus and other Beach Reads 2021

The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration Into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery

My mom recommended this book to me for a feel-good book about animals for adults and it was exactly what I needed. Sy Montgomery is a naturalist who explores consciousness through amazing stories of animals- particularly Octopuses.

The lives of these shy, amazing animals are unlike any other animal on the planet.  These intelligent animals with such distinct personalities are the backdrop for this wonderful feel-good, non-fiction book.

the zookeepers wife

The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman

There is no surprise that this feel-good nonfiction book was made into a movie. The story is just so compelling. When the Nazis invade Poland, the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo have their animal collection ransacked. They decide to hide fleeing Jewish people in the now empty animal homes.

I loved this book and I am so glad that I listened to this one. Suzanne Toren reads it beautifully.  Her wonderful accents and pronunciation of the words I surely would have butchered with my attempts added to the book. And if you love novels about animals, this is a wonderful choice.

When Harry Met Minnie

When Harry Met Minnie: A True Story of Love and Friendship by Martha Teichner

This book is a remarkable true story of love and friendship that is perfect for dog lovers everywhere. It is powerful and poignant but, it had me laughing out loud. ⁣

Martha and her Bull Terrier Minnie had a chance encounter with an old friend at the Union Square Farmers market. He told Martha about his friend Carol who was dying from cancer from 9/11 toxins and was trying to find someone to take her dog Harry . ⁣

What follows is a fairytale of unconditional love, friendship, and heartbreak. Be warned. Not all fairytales have happy endings. Perfect for fans on Lily and the Octopus and Tuesdays with Morrie. #Gifted by Celadon Books

sea biscuit

Sea Biscuit: An American Legend by Lara Hillenbrand

If you are looking for the best feel-good nonfiction book, look no further than this story which is the perfect underdog story. Seabiscuit is the story of a horse who overcame every obstacle, bad fortune, and injury to run one of the best horse races of all time.

This is one of the nonfiction books that reads like fiction because the story is fantastic. If you are looking for an animal book for adults you will love, this should be your pick.

marley and me

Marley and Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog by John Grogan

This is one of the best feel-good nonfiction books for beginners and a fantastic pick from animal noniction books. This is such a heartwarming story about a family and their huge yellow lab. Marley is a hilariously ridiculous and horribly behaved dog who teaches everyone around him what love really means.

If you are looking for nonfiction books that read like fiction, this is the book for you. After all, who would believe one dog could create so much havoc?

More Books About Animals for Adults

Middle-grade animal fiction books.

one and only ivan

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

Based on the true story of Ivan, a gorilla trapped in a shopping mall, this feel-good story is one of the best family audiobooks for any road trip.

Stella, a young girl gets Ivan to start painting again and she realizes how lonely he is. Bob, a stray dog, works to help Ivan and Ruby, a baby elephant, garner the attention they need to be sent to a better home.

Why We Love This Book:   This book will touch your heart. Even though it is partially a sad book, the ending will make it worthwhile. This is one of the best animal fiction books for middle grade and adults. Appropriate for ages  8-10 Find this book in books for 9-year-olds , zoo books, family audiobooks , animal novels

A Wolf Called Wander and other books for a 10-year-old

A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Parry

Rosanne does a marvelous job of telling the true story of a wolf trying to survive when he is separated from his family. Without the protection of his pack, Swift must learn how to thrive on his own.

Swift’s journey takes him across 1,000 miles of forests, highways, and rivers with danger facing him at every turn. We were riveted to this story when he listened on a recent family road trip. Even though this is a middle-grade book, we love this as a pick from novels about animals for adults as well.

Charlottes Web

Charlotte’s Web by E.B White

This is such a wonderful story of unconditional love and friendship.  When Fern saves the life of Wilbur, the runt of the pig litter, Charlotte befriends him and ultimately saves his life a second time. This is such a heartwarming classic book for kids. I try to read it without crying.

because of winn

Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

Because of Winn-Dixie is a well-written, heartwarming book about the story of a girl named Opal who finds friendship with a smelly, dirty stray dog causing chaos in a supermarket. The dog soon helps Opal make friends and becomes her best friend.

We love this pick from animal fiction books. It is a classic book for middle-grade through adult.

The Best Nonfiction Books for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Students that Love Animals

The Best Nonfiction Books for Students That Love Animals

Encourage reluctant readers with engaging nonfiction books about animals for 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade students.

If you have 3rd grade, 4th grade, or 5th grade students that don't like to read (and what teacher doesn't?), then finding engaging texts is a must. Books about animals are universally appealing - and very few students can resist a nonfiction animal book with unbelievable and incredible true stories.

The books below tell true stories of animal friendships, loyalty, and adventures.  They will inspire and motivate even the most reluctant reader.

Many of these books are written by the person who got to experience the inspiring animal stories in real life, not someone who set out to be a children's book author.  Perhaps this can inspire your students to become writers, telling stories about their own pets!

Use these Nonfiction Reading Response Activities  with any of the books below (or with any nonfiction book) to give students a chance to respond to the text in a meaningful, yet no prep way!

Animal Books for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Classrooms - Informational Text

1. owen and mzee: the true story of a remarkable friendship.

This is the sweet (and true) story of the friendship between a baby hippo and an old tortoise.  Owen, the hippo, was stranded after a tsunami and was then "adopted" by a 130 year old giant turtle named Mzee.  The book includes real photographs of the unlikely friends together.

The Reading is Fundamental website has some fun activities to supplement this book.

The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship

2. Tarra & Bella: The Elephant and Dog Who Became Best Friends

This is another sweet book about unlikely animal friends.   It is written by Carol Buckley, one of the co-founders of an elephant sanctuary in Tennessee.  Carol observed a unique friendship between Tarra, a retired circus elephant, and Bella, a stray dog on the sanctuary.

The story is sweet and at times unbelievable, but the photographs provide plenty of evidence that these two animals really were great friends.  Your upper elementary students will ooh and ahh over this story.

The Elephant and Dog Who Became Best Friends

3. Paws of Courage: True Tales of Heroic Dogs that Protect and Serve

This book tells the stories of over 20 real life service dogs.   The dogs in this book have a range of experiences. Some are war dogs, some are police dogs, some are rescue dogs, some are tracker dogs, and more.

The stories tell of the heroic ways real dogs help serve and protect humans, and the special bonds many humans have with their service dogs.  3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will love the extra information given about different dog breeds and the characteristics that make them extra special.

Use one of these text feature activity ideas to go along with this book!

True Tales of Heroic Dogs that Protect and Serve

4. Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear

This book tells the true story of the bear that inspired A. A. Milne to create the character Winnie-the-Pooh.   This is written by the great-great-granddaughter of Harry Colebourn, the Canadian soldier that rescued a small black bear at a train depot.

The story tells of the friendship between Colebourn and the bear he names Winnie, the journey Winnie takes from Canada to England, and how Winnie ends up in the London Zoo and meets a boy named Christopher Robin.

5. Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle

This book tells the heartwarming story of an Iraqi mutt that meets Marine Major Brian Dennis, one of the authors of this book.  Brian and the dog form an instant bond, and Brian and some other marines give attention and care to the malnourished dog.

When the Marines are relocated to a base 70 miles away, Brian thinks he will never see the dog that he affectionally called Nubs again.  But Nubs incredibly makes a long journey across the desert to find Major Brian.  Since the Marines are not allowed to keep pets, Brian raises funds to help him keep Nubs.

This story lends itself well to a point of view activity.

The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle

6. Koko's Kitten

This true story is written by Dr. Francine Patterson, best known for teaching a gorilla named Koko how to communicate using sign language.  Through sign language, Koko asked Dr. Patterson for a kitten.

The story shows the bond between Koko and the kitten, named All Ball, and the grief Koko feels when All Ball is tragically killed.  The photographs throughout the story of Koko and the kitten All Ball really help enhance the story.

Koko's Kitten

7. Byrd & Igloo: A Polar Adventure

This tells the story of two explorers - Richard Byrd, who claimed to be the first man to fly over both the North and South poles, and his dog Igloo, the first dog to travel to both the North and the South pole.

While this reads like a narrative and includes some speculation, the many primary resources and historical facts included make it a fitting addition to this nonfiction book list.
