Robert Galbraith is the pen name for J.K. Rowling (Joanne Rowling). Rowling states that she chose Robert Galbraith since it was one of her favorite male names, because her hero is Robert F. Kennedy, and because she hadn’t used the name for a character in any of her many novels (most notably, Harry Potter). The last name derives from her desire to be called Ella Galbraith as a child even though she has no memories of meeting anyone with the name Galbraith. However, she remained fascinated with the name. She held this fascination so much that she considered calling herself L.A. Galbraith when writing the Strike Series, but she refrained from doing so since the obvious initials hinted at her writing it. Rowling even questioned using the pen name for The Cuckoo’s Calling when stumbling upon a popular economist named J.K. Galbraith. The same initials made her quite nervous that people would figure out her real identity, but, thankfully, no one researched into the name too much.

Rowling explains that she used a pen name instead of publishing the crime novel under her popular and distinguished name to start her writing career anew. She longed the feeling of having to work hard to publish a successful novel as an unknown name. After she quickly became known and developed a notable reputation with her widely acclaimed novels, she noticed that hype and expectations formed around her books. In turn, people began to have predetermined, positive opinions on her novels. Rowling wanted to see the feedback she would receive from a novel that wasn’t riding on her many successes. Publishers and readers granted the book positive reviews (even though they didn’t know the author of the book), giving Rowling the opportunity to see how her book would do without her name behind it, but she still continues to write under the name to publish a different genre of books (from her other fantasy books) and to write as a persona (which is something she finds joy in). Even though the experience was short lasting, she still took these valuable points from it.

Robert Galbraith also has a military background that Rowling provided him with. She did this due to the genre of novels he was writing. All of the novels written under the pseudonym have been crime-fiction, so it would make sense for him to have an understanding of the Special Investigation Branch. This would also justify the his decision to write crime novels which would further assist in concealing Rowling’s identity. She made the decision to make him a military man having a job in the civilian security industry to justify his absence of a photograph or public appearance.

Galbraith has written several crime fiction novels. His debut novel was called the Cuckoo’s Calling, and it was published in 2013. It is about about a brother that doesn’t believe that his sister’s death is a suicide. The model died from falling from a snow covered balcony. Because of her brother suspicions, he calls a private investigator to determine the cause of her death. Cormoran Strike, the investigator, is a mentally and physically hurt war veteran. His wounds have caused his life to descend into chaos. However, this case gives him hope to financially stay afloat. It soon becomes apparent that as he delves deeper into the model’s life, the more danger he is put it. The Cuckoo’s Calling is set in London where the reader is taken to the quiet city of Mayfair to the busy streets of Soho. This debut novel allows the reader to understand who Cormoran Strike is. Readers see into his life on a level to perceive his complexity while also retaining the heart of a thriller novel. It retains this by presenting a case that keeps you and the investigator on edge. The novel has been regarded with positive reviews and large success from reviewers, authors, publishers, and, most importantly, readers, and it has won the 2013 LA Times Book Prize for Mystery/Thriller.

The second novel that Galbraith published in the Cormoran Strike detective series was The Silkworm in 2014. The Silkworm is a novel that is crafted with numerous twists. Cormoran Strike is once again the main character, along with his assistant, Robin Ellacott. The case he must investigate is concerning Owen Quine disappearance. Quine’s wife believes that he has ventured alone for a few days ( since he’s gone off before), and she only wants Strike to bring him back home. The more complex Strike’s investigation becomes the clearer it becomes that Quine’s absence goes beyond his wife’s beliefs. Quine is a novelist whose newest manuscript is made up of the lives of everyone he knows. The novel’s publishing would result in several people’s lives being decimated, so these people have reasoning to ensure that their lives aren’t published. After Quine is found murdered in a brutal fashion in a weird circumstance, Strike has to quickly uncover a killer different from any he has dealt with before. Strike’s limits are tested as he is faced with one of his most difficult cases. He is forced to think and act in a way he hasn’t done before to solve the case in time. This novel has also been received with plenty of positive reception.

The third novel in the Cormoran Strike series is Career Of Evil. This thriller begins with Robin Ellacott opening a mysterious package containing a severed leg. Her boss is Cormoran Strike, and upon hearing the news, he reacts less frightened but equally alarmed. Strike believes that there are four possible suspects. These suspects are parts of Strike’s past that are all able to carry out such cruelty. Strike and Robin take on the case for themselves since the police are investigating a suspect Strike becomes sure to not be the killer. He and Robin begin to divulge into the lives of the remaining three men. Following more horrifying actions, the two realize that time is slipping away. The Career of Evil also details two people who are dealing with personal and professional conflicts. It builds upon the other two novels in the series by giving you an even deeper look into the feelings and perspective of the main character. The reader is made closer to the character by having a new, deeper understanding of him.

Loved the running grave can’t wait for the next book to come out please hurry up l need to know what happens between Robin and strike will they ever be a couple

Fabulous series. His, (her), writing is only second best to Pat Conroy. Absolutely love the style. And Love love Strike and his developing relationship with Robin. Getting ready to read the third one.

This series is extraordinary! I have been binge reading them one after another and as they are all quite long, I’ve lost a lot of sleep. Sadly, I am now down to the last one (the fifth) so I hope she’s busy writing right now!! Can’t recommend enough! Definitely several cuts above any of the other newer series out there.

Absolutely loved “Troubled Blood”

Love this series, he(she) has a new book coming Troubled Blood but not until the end of September, so excited.

All 7 Robert Galbraith Books in Order | Cormoran Strike Series

Are you a thriller enthusiast intrigued by the process of solving a mysterious crime or murder case? Robert Galbraith’s books in the Cormoran Strike series will run your fantasy wild. The series centers on solving enthralling crime cases by detective strike and his colleague Robin Ellacott. But what’s the best way to read the Robert Galbraith books in order?

Below we’ll show you what order to read the Cormoran Strike books and share a brief summary of each book.

Who is Robert Galbraith?

Potterheads (fans of Harry Potter) and book readers everywhere are well aware of the series’ world-famous author, J.K. Rowling. But did you know that Robert Galbraith is a penname for none other than Rowling herself?

So the obvious question becomes, why did J.K. Rowling write as Robert Galbraith instead of herself? As you might already suspect, the answer is that she didn’t want the pressure of writing as Rowling . With the wide-spread success of Harry Potter, certain expectations are placed upon Rowling for any book she publishes.

The ability to write something new and different without the hype of her name allowed her to remove stress from the process of writing a novel. Of course, Galbraith’s identity didn’t stay secret for long or we still wouldn’t know about it today.

Rowling’s first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was published in 1997. J.K. Rowling did not publish any books for adults until she published The Casual Vacancy in 2011 under her own name which was received with mixed reactions.

Hence why later in 2013, she published her first book as Robert Galbraith, The Cuckoo’s Calling.

Her books have been adapted for TV, translated into many languages, and won numerous awards and honors. Her fifth book in the Comoran Strike series, Troubled Blood, got the Book of the Year Award in the British Book Awards, Crime and Fiction category.

Robert Galbraith Books in Order of Publication

The only books JK Rowling has published under her Robert Galbraith pseudonym are the Cormoran Strike books. Each of these books follows a new standalone mystery he must solve, however, the best way to read these books is by following the publication order.

That’s because while the mysteries are new, Strike’s relationship to those around him is recurring. If you enjoy character-driven stories, then you will want to read the Robert Galbraith books in order of publication. This way you will also avoid any potential spoilers about his character development.

  • The Cuckoo’s Calling (2013)
  • The Silkworm (2014)
  • Career of Evil (2015)
  • Lethal White (2018)
  • Troubled Blood (2020)
  • The Ink Black Heart (2022)
  • The Running Grave (2023)

Cormoran Strike TV Adaptations

BBC announced adapting Galbraith’s Strike series for TV in 2016. The first season premiered in August 2017 starring Tom Burke as Cormoran Strike and Holliday Grainger as Robin Ellacott. Perhaps just as much as the mystery, the tension and will-they-won’t-they between Strike and Robin has kept fans hooked.

Since the premiere there have since four more seasons, each adapting one book per season. Like the books, each season tackles a new standalone mystery, but the character development and progression run throughout the series.

The sixth season of the popular TV show has yet to be officially confirmed, but reports in March 2023 said the deal was close to being locked in.

It would follow the plot of The Ink Black Heart, published in August 2022. The book bears striking resemblance to JK Rowling’s own life as it follows the creator of a YouTube cartoon series who is murder following accusations of using racist and ableist tropes in their work. However, Rowling has said that the plot does not pull from her own experiences, despite recognizing the similarities.

The fifth season of Strike drew in eight million viewers for its premiere in December 2022 and averaged 6.9 million viewers throughout its four-part series.

Rowling said in August 2022 she has ten books planned for the series, so there is hope for ten seasons of the show following the current format.

This time, we have a missing author and a wife who hires Strike to find him and bring him back—as a wife does, apparently, when her man has run off. The third book in the series hits close to home for our P.I., as Ellacott opens a package to find a severed leg—I know! Strike thinks that four people from his past could be responsible. That’s a lot of horrible people to know, my dude. Anyhoo, with the police convinced they know who is responsible, Strike isn’t so sure, so he and Ellacott, of course, do their own sleuthing.

P.I. work is difficult enough without the client, who appears mentally distressed, running out in the middle of hiring a P.I. So Strike and Ellacott not only have to try and figure out what crime their client witnessed as a child, but that’s made even more difficult for Strike now that he’s a “celebrity” P.I. I mean, sleuthing involves a lot of being able to be invisible, so good luck with that, man. Also, get your relationships in order! Yeah, I’m being vague—you’ll just have to read the series to see why.

Robert Galbraith is the pseudonym of world-famous children’s author J.K. Rowling.

After the phenomenal success of Harry Potter, Rowling was keen to try her hand at writing adult fiction. And so, in 2013, she published the debut title of what would become the bestselling crime fiction series Cormoran Strike. And with that, her alter ego, Robert Galbraith, was born.

Rowling chose a pseudonym as she wanted the novels to be judged on merit rather than living in the shadow of Harry Potter . And for several months after book one, The Cuckoo’s Calling, hit the shelves, the author’s true identity remained a mystery. But rumors on Twitter soon began to spread, and her cover was eventually blown.

After her identity was revealed, sales of The Cuckoo’s Calling skyrocketed, and from then on, readers have been hooked. Rowling has gone on to pen six Cormoran Strike novels under the pen name Robert Galbraith, each following the adventures of a pair of British private investigators who take on criminal cases the police cannot solve.

If you’re looking for a brand-new whodunit series to keep you entertained this summer, why not try the Cormoran Strike series?

Table of Contents

Robert Galbraith’s Books in Order

J.K. Rowling has written six novels as Robert Galbraith, all forming part of the critically acclaimed Cormoran Strike series. Below, I’ll list all the books in order, along with a summary.

The Cormoran Strike Books

Cormoran Strike is a former SIB investigator and army veteran who lost the lower portion of his left leg in a bombing in Afghanistan.

After leaving the army, Strike became a private investigator. But at the start of the series, he’s struggling to make ends meet. With only a few clients on his books, he’s forced to sleep in his office to repay his debts. But when he hires Robin Ellacott as his new assistant, his fortunes begin to change. Strike and Ellacott make a formidable team, solving seemingly unsolvable crimes up and down the British Isles.

The series began in 2013, and after the success of the first two novels, the BBC bought the rights to an exclusive five-episode TV adaptation. Since then, the broadcaster has transformed each new book into a smash hit television show, bringing millions of new readers to Rowling’s original works.

In January this year, Rowling announced the title of the series of the next installment, The Running Grave. The story remains a secret, but if history is anything to go by, it’ll be an action-packed and wildly entertaining read. There are six novels in the series to date, but according to the author, there are plenty more yet to come.

The Cormoran Strike Books in Reading and Publication Order

Each book in the Cormoran Strike series tells a new story. The characters and their lives evolve and intertwine from book to book. So, to get the most out of the series, follow the publication order listed below.

1. The Cuckoo’s Calling (2013)

With just one client and a mountain of debts, Cormoran Strike is in dire straits. But then, John Bristow arrives at his detective agency with the case of a lifetime.

Bristow’s supermodel sister, Lula ‘Cuckoo’ Landry, fell to her death just a few months prior. The tragedy was splashed across the front pages of every newspaper, and police ruled her death a suicide. But John is certain that his sister was murdered.

And so Strike dives headfirst into the case and enters an enticing world of glamor, seduction, and delusion to discover the truth behind the young beauty’s death.

2. The Silkworm (2014)

Author Owen Quine has disappeared, and his worried wife has called private detective Cormoran Strike to help her find him. It’s not the first time Owen has taken himself off for a few days, so his wife and Strike assume it will be a simple case of tracking him down and bringing him home.

But as Strike delves into the case, he realizes there’s much more to Owen’s disappearance than meets the eye. The missing novelist’s latest manuscript is a scathing pen portrait of his friends and enemies. If it ever made it to print, many a reputation would be ruined. And so, plenty of people would do anything to ensure his work remains unpublished.

Soon after, just as Strike suspected, Owen Quine is found murdered in cold blood. And now, it’s down to Strike to bring his ruthless killer to justice.

3. Career of Evil (2015)

A mysterious package has arrived at Robin Ellacott’s door, and when she opens it, she’s met with a harrowing discovery. Inside the box is a severed leg.

The police take on the case, but their ill-placed investigations lead them on a fruitless goose chase. And so, Robin and her boss, Cormoran Strike, are forced to take matters into their own hands.

Strike narrows the suspects down to three men. It’s clear that they’re both in danger, and it’s only a matter of time before the psychopath they’re chasing backs them into a corner. But as they delve into the investigation, more horrific incidents occur.

4. Lethal White (2018)

A troubled young man named Billy has come to Cormoran Strike’s office looking for help. The details are fuzzy, but Billy remembers witnessing a harrowing crime as a child. He needs Strike to investigate the case.

And so, Cormoran Strike and his former assistant turned business partner Robin Ellacott embark on a hair-raising journey through the backstreets of the British capital, into the secret realms of Parliament, and onto the imposing walls of a crumbling mansion nestled deep in the English countryside.

Meanwhile, Strike must keep a low profile while navigating the unwanted attention of his newfound fame. And to make matters worse, his relationship with Robin is becoming more complex daily.

5. Troubled Blood (2020)

Cormoran Strike is taking a well-needed break from the office to visit his family in Cornwall. But work is never far from his mind, and soon, he finds himself embroiled in a long-forgotten missing person’s case.

Margot Bamborough disappeared without a trace in 1974. In the years that have passed, her daughter has been desperately searching for her, to no avail. Strike only has little experience with cold cases, but this one is too intriguing to pass up. And so, he agrees to investigate.

With the help of his partner, Robin, he begins to dig for clues. But he quickly discovers that the circumstances surrounding Margot’s disappearance are more complicated than he ever imagined. And even after all these years, the path to the truth could be deadly.

6. The Ink Black Heart (2022)

Edie Ledwell is the co-creator of the famous cartoon The Ink Black Heart. Now that her creation is being adapted into a Netflix movie, her public profile is at an all-time high.

But recently, Edie has been the recipient of some rather unwanted attention. She’s being persecuted by an anonymous online troll who goes by the name Anomie, and Edie is desperate for Robin and Strike to uncover her tormentor’s true identity.

Yet, with a mountain of cases piled high on her desk, Robin decides not to take on the investigation. After all, there are far more pressing matters at hand. But a few days later, she receives the harrowing news that Edie has been found dead. Her tasered, mutilated body was found in Highgate Cemetery, the chilling setting of her famous cartoon.

And so, Robin and her partner Cormoran Strike decide to investigate and find out the truth behind the online persona known as Anomie. But the deeper they dig, the more danger they find themselves in.

If you love crime thrillers, detective fiction, and murder mysteries , you won’t want to miss J.K Rowling’s Cormoran Strike series. Written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, these books are an unforgettable thrill ride packed with fascinating characters, intriguing plot lines, and heart-stopping cliffhangers that will keep you reading way past bedtime.

However, as Strike delves deeper into the investigation, he uncovers a chilling truth—Quine’s disappearance is not a mere coincidence.

Unveiling a manuscript that contains scathing and venomous portrayals of nearly everyone in Quine’s life, Strike realizes that if this damning novel were to be published, it would shatter lives and leave numerous individuals with strong motives to silence the author.

Tragically, Quine’s lifeless body is eventually discovered in a grotesque murder scene, presenting Strike with a race against time to decipher the sinister intentions of an unparalleled killer—one unlike any he has encountered before. The Silkworm grips readers’ attention with its enthralling plot twists at every corner. It serves as the second installment in J.K. With the police focusing their attention on a suspect Strike has effectively ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands, delving deep into the dark and twisted realms inhabited by the other three potential culprits. However, as more horrifying acts unfold, time rapidly slips away for the determined duo.

Lethal White (Cormoran Strike Book 4)

Despite Billy’s evident mental distress and hazy recollections, there is an undeniable sincerity to his story that deeply troubles the private investigator. However, before Strike can delve further into the matter, Billy abruptly flees from his office in a state of panic.

Determined to uncover the truth behind Billy’s claims, Strike and his partner-turned-associate Robin Ellacott embark on a convoluted journey that takes them through the labyrinthine backstreets of London, into the clandestine inner circles of Parliament, and to a beguiling yet ominous manor nestled deep in the countryside.

As they navigate this intricate investigation, Strike’s own life becomes increasingly complicated. His newfound notoriety as a private detective forces him to abandon his former clandestine approach. Furthermore, the dynamics of his relationship with Robin, now an indispensable asset to the agency, grow more fraught and intricate, surpassing the boundaries of their professional partnership. With its compelling blend of addictive suspense and dark humor, Lethal White is one of Robert Galbraith’s most ambitious novels to date.

Troubled Blood (A Cormoran Strike Novel Book 5)

Private Detective Cormoran Strike finds himself engrossed in a compelling new case while visiting his family in Cornwall.

A woman seeks his assistance in locating her mother, Margot Bamborough, who mysteriously vanished in 1974, leaving behind unanswered questions. Undeterred by the daunting challenge of a cold case that spans four decades, Strike’s curiosity is piqued, and he takes on the investigation alongside the numerous other cases he and his partner, Robin Ellacott, are currently tackling.

Meanwhile, Robin herself grapples with a turbulent divorce and unwelcome advances from unwanted suitors, all while wrestling with her own complex emotions towards Strike.

As Strike and Robin delve into the enigma surrounding Margot’s disappearance, they find themselves embroiled in a web of intricate complexities. The case unfolds with tantalizing leads that involve tarot cards, a chilling serial killer, and witnesses whose trustworthiness is questionable at best. They soon discover that even cases long past can harbor deadly consequences, forcing them to confront the perilous depths of the human psyche.

Private detective Robin Ellacott is taken aback when an agitated and disheveled Edie Ledwell barges into the office, desperate to speak with her. Edie, the co-creator of the beloved cartoon series “The Ink Black Heart,” is being relentlessly harassed by an online persona known as Anomie. Determined to uncover the true identity of this tormentor, Edie implores Robin for help.

Initially dismissing the case as beyond their agency’s scope, Robin thinks little of it until she stumbles upon a shocking headline a few days later. Edie has been brutally tasered and murdered in the eerie setting of Highgate Cemetery, the very place that served as inspiration for “The Ink Black Heart.”

Now, Robin and her business partner Cormoran Strike find themselves entangled in the quest to unveil Anomie’s true persona. As they navigate a labyrinth of online aliases, tangled business interests, and familial conflicts, the duo faces a relentless challenge that stretches the limits of their deductive prowess. Moreover, their pursuit places them in newfound and chilling danger.

The Ink Black Heart is a gripping and ingeniously crafted mystery, showcasing Robert Galbraith’s unparalleled storytelling prowess.

JK Rowling’s Robert Galbraith Mysteries: Cormoran Strike Books in Order

In some cases, we earn commissions from affiliate links in our posts.

Back in 2013, Robert Galbraith came on the scene with a book called The Cuckoo's Callin g. It was the first in what would become a series of books about a London-based private investigator named Cormoran Strike.

Except that Robert Galbraith wasn't a real person.

Robert Galbraith was actually JK Rowling, the world-famous author of the Harry Potter series .

The Cormoran Strike Books in Order

robert galbraith books order

The Cormoran Strike mystery novels are set in London, beginning with the year 2010. Cormoran Strike is relatively new to owning his own detective agency, but he has a military background with history as a Royal Military Police Special Investigation Branch investigator. He's also an Oxford-dropout and the estranged, illegitimate son of rock star Johnny Rokeby (thanks to his late mother, famed groupie Leda Strike).

His assistant Robin begins the series as a temp worker sent over by an agency he forgot to cancel. She's a newly-engaged college dropout with a traumatic past and a seriously unpleasant fiancé.

Both are tremendously competent, and the series follows the two as they solve tough cases and develop a close friendship (with fairly obvious hints at more to come).

Do I Need to Read the Cormoran Strike Novels in Order?

Though not absolutely necessary, we definitely recommend reading the Cormoran Strike books in order. Each book has a self-contained mystery, but unlike some mysteries where the books are almost entirely about the case, the Cormoran Strike novels also include quite a bit about the personal lives of Strike, Robin, and some of the side characters.

The mysteries will still make perfect sense if you read them out of order, but you'll feel a bit lost in terms of character development and relationships. You'll be able to piece most of it together, but it won't be nearly as satisfying.

In The Silkworm, Strike is approached by the wife of novelist Owen Quine. He's gone missing again, and she needs him to place a call and help track him down. Unfortunately, this disappearance isn't as simple as all the others.

Cormoran Strike Book 3: Career of Evil

robert galbraith books order

Robin is settling into her job and planning a wedding until one horrifying day when someone sends her a severed leg. Together, she and Strike rush to figure out why they were targeted – before the bad press scares off all their clients.

Cormoran Strike Book 4: Lethal White

robert galbraith books order

As the book opens, a mentally ill man named Billy visits Cormoran's office seeking help with a murder he thinks he witnessed as a child. As Cormoran and Robin investigate, it draws the attention of a PI hired by a member of Parliament who's being blackmailed. Before too long, the two of them are in the middle of a high-profile investigation with ties to both grassroots activists and some of the country's most prominent politicians.

Cormoran Strike Book 5: Troubled Blood

robert galbraith books order

While visiting family in Cornwall, Cormoran is approached by a woman seeking answers about her mother's disappearance 40 years prior. Though he knows it will be tough, he and Robin decide to tackle the puzzling cold case.

This book is particularly interesting because of the way it plays with time. It unfolds over the course of a little more than a year, and much of the investigation deals with decades-old events and memories.

Cormoran Strike Book 6: The Ink Black Heart

robert galbraith books order

While Troubled Blood handled a cold case full of mostly geriatric witnesses, The Ink Black Heart pivots to the more youthful world of the internet and online harassment.

When cartoonist Edie Ledwell shows up begging to speak with Robin, she describes a mysterious online stalker called Anomie who's been threatening and harassing her. Robin rejects the case as being beyond their capabilities, thinking nothing of it until a few days later. That's when she hears Edi has been murdered in Highgate Cemetery.

Feeling guilty and curious about Anomie's true identity, Robin and Strike quickly find themselves wrapped up in a web of shadowy businesses, online aliases, and family conflicts. Not surprisingly, the case may also put them in danger.

In The Running Grave , Strike and Robin are approached by a father whose son Will has run off to Norfolk to join a religious cult. In an attempt to rescue Will, it's decided that Robin will infiltrate the cult and live among its members. Unfortunately, she's not fully prepared for the dangers of deep undercover work.

The Cormoran Strike TV Series: Strike (UK) or CB Strike (US)

robert galbraith books order

If you enjoy the books, don't miss the TV series. Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger are wonderfully cast in the roles, and while we strongly feel every book should have been adapted into a six-episode series, they're still very enjoyable in their shorter adaptations. If you don't have time to re-read each book ahead of the new one (quite a task now that there are 6 and some are 1000+ pages), the shows are a great way to catch up on what happened in past books.

In the UK, the episodes have aired on BBC One. If you missed their original air dates and you can't find them on iPlayer or another streaming service, you can pick up the DVDs below:

  • Set 1 (The Cuckoo's Calling / The Silkworm / Career of Evil)
  • Set 2 (Lethal White)

In the US, HBO Max is now the exclusive streaming outlet for the series. You can also purchase streaming copies HERE (check the SD price rather than the default HD if you're on a tight budget). In case you hadn't checked in a while, Troubled Blood (season 5 or 3, depending on where you're watching) is now available.

  • Stream it on HBO Max
  • DVD Set 1 (The Cuckoo's Calling / The Silkworm / Career of Evil)

The Ink Black Heart is filming during the summer of 2023, but there's currently no estimate on the premiere date. Our best guess would be winter 2023/2024, but it's still too early to have any confirmed details.

There's been no word on a TV adaptation of the 2023 novel The Running Grave (yet).

The 6 Robert Galbraith Books In Order

Robert Galbraith is the pseudonym of Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling. Under this pen name, Rolwing writes the Cormoran Strike series.

These crime fiction novels follow a grumpy detective named Cormoran Strike as he solves crimes with his highly competent assistant, Robin Ellacott.

The books explore the complex relationships between these two very different friends who have a passion for solving mysteries.

Primarily, these cases are murder mysteries in the same vein as other detective literature, such as the Hercule Poirot books.

Containing 6 books, the Cormoran Strike series has proven to be incredibly popular.

Many of Galbraith’s books have been incredibly popular, which is thanks in part to the reveal that Rowling was using this alias.

The first book in the series became a bestseller following this reveal.

The novels have been adapted into a BBC television show named Strike. This adaptation stars Tom Burke as the titular detective, while Holliday Grainger portrays Robin Ellacott.

Other recurring actors in the series include Ben Crompton, Killian Scott, Kerr Logan, and Natasha O’Keeffe.

About The Robert Galbraith Books

Robert Galbraith is the author of the Cormoran Strike book series.

This series follows the titular character, a veteran and former SIB investigator turned private detective.

At the start of the series, Cormoran is struggling to maintain his failing detective agency.

However, things begin to look up when he meets temporary assistant Robin Ellacott.

After solving the case of a murdered supermodel, Cormoran hires Ellacott as his permanent assistant.

Though Cormoran has attempted to avoid the limelight thanks to his famous parents, rockstar Jonny Rokeby and model Leda Strike, many of these high-profile cases draw media attention.

Throughout the series, Cormoran and Robin get to the bottom of different mysteries.

They develop a strong friendship that is built on the strong foundation of a shared passion for detective work.

Cormoran and Robin are the protagonists of these novels.

Supporting characters include Matthew Cunliffe, Robin’s unsupportive fiancé, and Eric Wardle, a detective who develops a friendship with the protagonists.

Cormoran’s former fiancée, Charlotte Campbell, also appears in several books, as do several members of his large family.

Among the themes of this book series are death, love, passion, friendship, murder, mystery, and the past.

Since each novel focuses on a different case, these books center around different themes.

The Robert Galbraith Books In Order

The cuckoo’s calling.

The first book published under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith is The Cuckoo’s Calling.

This incredible debut novel introduces readers to Cormoran Strike, who is a grizzly private investigator and veteran.

Having recently broken up with his girlfriend, Charlotte, Cormoran is forced to live in his office.

Unfortunately, his work life is not much better, since Cormoran has very few clients remaining.

Things begin to change when Cormoran hires Robin as a temporary assistant.

The agency is soon hired by John Bristow, who wishes to investigate the death of his adopted sister, a supermodel named Lula Landry.

As Cormoran and Robin investigate the death of this troubled celebrity, they are brought into the dark world of wealth and fame.

  • Cormoran is a unique detective and protagonist.
  • Galbrath’s writing is exceptional and highly detailed.
  • This is a compelling mystery narrative that will hook readers.
  • Some of the suspects feel cliched, such as Guy Somé.

The Silkworm

The Cuckoo’s Calling is followed by The Silkworm, which centers around the death of a controversial author. Owen Quine is an unpopular writer.

When he disappears, his wife, Leonora Quine, contacts Cormoran for help. Leonora suspects that her husband has merely gone away for a few days.

However, further investigation proves that this disappearance was purposeful.

Before disappearing, Owen compiled a manuscript containing harshly lampooning almost all the people that he is close with.

As Cormoran and Robin investigate, they are soon led to Owen’s murdered body.

They find a strong link between the state of the body and the manuscript, suggesting that the two are intimately connected.

Cormoran and Robin face a dangerous killer in this sequel.

  • Robin becomes a more developed character, as she is given a little more to do here.
  • This is a fantastic foray into the literacy and publishing industries.
  • There are some comedic moments in this book that distract from the rather gruesome main plot.
  • There are perhaps too many characters in this book, as it is difficult to stay on top of them all.

Career Of Evil

In Career of Evil, Robin is sent a mysterious package. Upon opening this package, Robin discovers a severed leg.

This is a clear message to Cormoran, who theorizes that the perpetrator is probably one of the 4 people who hate him most.

When the police investigate the least likely culprit, Cormoran is forced to take matters into his own hands.

As Robin and Cormoran search for a deadly killer, their relationship becomes increasingly tumultuous. They are forced to rely on the aid of Shanker, a shady associate from Cormoran’s past.

Meanwhile, Robin discovers that she is being followed by an unknown stalker .

With her marriage to the invalidating Matthew becoming rapidly closer, Robin finds herself in a dangerous position. Will she marry the man who has betrayed her?

  • This is an interesting take on the serial killer narrative.
  • Galbraith masterfully blends the personal lives of Cormoran and Robin with the case.
  • The perspective of the killer is fascinating from a psychological perspective.
  • The violence is a little excessive at times.

Lethal White

Lethal White is the fourth book written by Robert Galbraith . In this book, Cormoran and Robin investigate a case that happened decades ago.

This case links countryside crime with modern politics in the UK.

A man named Billy asks Cormoran to help him solve a murder that he witnessed as a boy.

Though Billy has health issues, Cormoran is nonetheless keen to help him. With the help of Robin, Cormoran aims to find out what happened decades prior.

The case becomes infinitely more complex when a Member of Parliament is violently killed. Intertwined with this, Robin and Cormoran face personal struggles.

Robin’s marriage to Matthew threatens to implode as she discovers that he is hiding a relationship-ending secret.

  • This gritty and mature narrative is perfect for adults who love murder mysteries.
  • The opening of the book is filled with intrigue and suspense, as it picks off from where the previous book ended.
  • The relationship between Robin and Cormoran develops significantly here, becoming even more complex than before.
  • The narrative feels somewhat erratic, as there are numerous narratives to juggle.

Troubled Blood

Up next, Troubled Blood sees Cormoran taking a vacation to Cornwell so that he can catch up with his family.

Whilst there, Cormoran is approached by Anna Phipps, who wants help finding her mother.

Anna’s mother, Margot Bamborough, disappeared in 1974 and became one of the most famous missing cases of the time.

Cormoran decides to take on this cold case, despite the unlikeliness that he will be able to solve it.

Robin helps Cormoran with the investigation, despite the piling number of cases that they have to work through.

Meanwhile, Robin has to deal with stresses that occur in her own life, including relationship issues.

As this dynamic duo investigates the disappearance of Margot Bamborough, they find that this decades-old case is filled with intrigue, complexity, and unreliable witnesses.

  • Robin and Cormoran both receive plenty of character development in the fifth installment of the series.
  • The book handles complex family relationships well.
  • The narrative has a fulfilling ending that’s worth reaching.
  • The pacing is quite slow. This is not helped by the length of the book, which is unnecessarily long.

The Ink Black Heart

In the latest entry into the series, Galbraith explores the complex and intricate world of online hate. Edie Ledwell appears at the agency and begs for help.

As the creator of The Ink Black Heart, a well-liked online cartoon, Edie is abused online by someone using the moniker of Anomie.

Edie wishes to find the identity of her abuser.

However, Robin doubts that they can get to the bottom of this mystery and so turns down the case. Just a few days later, Edie is found dead.

Consequently, Robin and Cormoran are thrust into the investigation.

As they hunt for the identity of Anomie, Cormoran, and Robin find that their abilities and skills are limited when it comes to the online world.

  • The narrative contains plenty of twists and turns.
  • Galbraith accurately depicts online hate in a complex manner.
  • With more than 1,000 pages of content, The Ink Black Heart is far too long and could easily have been streamlined.
  • Rowling’s problematic personal views appear in this book.

The Cuckoo’s Calling

In the first book of the Cormoran Strike series, named The Cuckoo’s Calling , private investigator Cormoran struggles to keep his business alive due to the injury in Afghanistan that left him with a severed leg. When all hopes seem to be lost, John Bristow, brother of famous supermodel Lula Landry, knocks at the door. Although Lula’s death was ruled out as a suicide, John doesn’t believe this is what actually happened. This opens up new hope for both of them, and Cormoran decides to try and solve this mystery.

The Silkworm

A new case opens up in the second book as the novelist Owen Quine goes missing. His wife wants Strike to track Owen and bring him back home, as he has this strange habit of disappearing on purpose. However, private investigator Cormoran Strike soon finds Owen brutally murdered, and now he must untangle who is the ruthless killer behind this gruesome crime before things get out of control.

Career of Evil

In the third book of the Cormoran Strike novels, his assistant, Robin, opens up a mysterious package only to find that it contains a woman’s severed leg. Strike has his suspicions about who might have sent this horrifying package, so he and Robin decide to investigate the matter more profoundly.

Lethal White

The fourth book of the series, named Lethal White , takes Strike’s and Robin’s relationship to the next level, making Robin less valuable in matters of business. On top of all, his newfound fame makes him incapable of working from the shadow, as he once did, while the case of a young man named Billy leads Strike to a labyrinthine investigation.

Troubled Blood
